Thomas Brackett Named 2021 Division III Men’s Lacrosse YRL Unsung Hero

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. -- For his impact both on and off the field as a member of the Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team, Thomas Brackett has been named the YRL Unsung Hero for Division III Men's Lacrosse after picking up the prestigious honor from the One Love Foundation on Monday afternoon.

Each year since 2011, six student-athletes from around the nation are chosen as YRL Unsung Heroes. The award recognizes individuals who have made a meaningful impact on their team and in the community. Named in honor of former University of Virginia standout Yeardley Love, the award celebrates dedication, integrity, humility, hard work, community service, leadership, kindness, and sportsmanship.

On the Division III level, Brackett was celebrated alongside Colby College's Amelia Lubrano, who was the women's recipient. Meanwhile, the other four award-winners included Syracuse's Lila Nazarian, Harvard's Kyle Anderson, Saint Leo's Marisa Souchak, and Lynn's Ben Jackson.

Brackett is the first Captain in program history to receive the Unsung Hero award. Previously, former star Chris Albright was one of three finalists for the honor in 2018.

Receiving recognition throughout the year for his efforts, Brackett was also named the recipient of the William Donaldson Service Award in December. That honor is given to the member of the Christopher Newport men's lacrosse program who demonstrates a strong dedication to service in support of the team while representing the values to which all Captains aspire.

A member of Christopher Newport's ROTC program, Brackett is committed to serving as an officer in the United States Army after graduation. An active participant in the school's chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and an advocate for mental health awareness, the senior also led a fundraising campaign that raised over $8,000 for the Boston Children's Hospital.

In the classroom, Brackett is also a Dean's List student and member of the Academic All-Conference Team as an economics major.

On the field, the Manassas, Virginia native appeared in 14 games during his time in Newport News. Leading the way between the pipes, he posted 11 scoreless appearances while compiling a .708 save percentage, which stands as the finest mark by a Captain. Meanwhile, in 2021, he saw time in seven games and registered a 5.99 goals-against-average while helping lead Christopher Newport to an appearance in the Final Four for the first time in program history.
