NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Starting bright and early Friday morning, the Christopher Newport University baseball team will play host to the opening weekend of action in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Baseball Championships. The second-seeded Captains will host #3 Mary Washington and #4 St. Mary's (Md.) in a double-elimination bracket starting at 9:00 a.m. on Friday with the neutral site matchup slated first. Christopher Newport will then play a pair, taking on the losing team of game one at around 12:30 p.m. followed by a matchup with the game one winner at approximately 4:00 p.m.

Saturday's schedule will be determined by how many teams remain following Friday's action, but game times are set for 11:00 a.m. and, if necessary, 2:00 p.m. The other pod will be hosted by top-seeded Salisbury against #5 Southern Virginia in a best-of-three series.

The Captains enter the postseason with a 19-9 overall record and winners in nine of their last 11 games. CNU split a doubleheader against St. Mary's (Md.) in the regular season finale last weekend and also split against the Seahawks at home on April 3-4. Against Mary Washington, the Captains are 4-0 this season.

Freshman Jay Cassady leads the offense with a freshman-record 14-game hitting streak heading into Friday's games. It is also the longest hit streak of the season for CNU overall and the longest for the Captains since Conner Clark had a 16-game roll in 2019. Cassady is hitting .392, ranking second in the league, while delivering 26 RBI and 15 extra-base hits.

Senior catcher Eric O'Brien has also been a dangerous threat at the plate for CNU all season long, hitting .355 with a team-leading 29 RBI this year. Sophomores Jonathan Fisher (.318) and Kyle Schofield (.309) are hitting over .300 as well with a combined 46 RBI and 49 runs scored. In just 28 games, Fisher has 38 runs scored, ranking just outside the top 50 nationally in runs per game.

On the mound, Cassady has helped lead the rotation as well with a pair of wins in seven starts and a 4.70 ERA. Senior Josh Husby (5-0) leads the staff with a 1.76 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 46.0 innings of work while sophomore Dylan Weber (5-2) is coming off a career-best start with 14 strikeouts against the Seahawks last weekend. He leads the team with 54 K's in 45.1 innings of work.

Third-seeded Mary Washington comes into the weekend with a 9-15 overall record and a 3-1 mark against St. Mary's this season. The Eagles are led by David Lambertson, hitting .397 in 21 games played.

St. Mary's is 9-13 overall and finished the conference slate with a 7-9 record. The Seahawks are led by Dillon Waters both on the mound and at the dish hitting .353 with a 3.72 ERA.
