NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In the midst of a three-game homestand, the ninth-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will host Mary Washington in a key Coast-to-Coast Conference clash at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Jennings Family Stadium.

Entering the weekend, the Captains currently sit at 6-3 overall and 1-1 against conference competition. Meanwhile, Mary Washington is 1-5 and 0-2 against league foes.

Adhering to the campus COVID-19 guidelines, access to Saturday's game will be limited to two designated family members of each player and coach on Christopher Newport's roster along with a select number of students and staff from the university. Opposing fans and other interested parties will not be permitted to attend the contest. For specific details on the spectator guidelines, please read the athletic department's 2021 spring sports policy, which is available at the top of this release.

For those individuals unable to attend the game, Christopher Newport will provide a broadcast of the action with Andy McGregor and Will Geise calling all of the action. Live stats will also be available through CNUsports.com. Direct links to the broadcast and live stats can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

Saturday's game will mark Christopher Newport's first contest in nearly a month in which the Captains are not facing a nationally-ranked opponent. Since March 17, the team has faced a pair of games with No. 5 Lynchburg as well as single tests against No. 2 Salisbury and No. 20 Colorado College.

During the recent gauntlet of top-20 foes, Brady Altobello led the team with 12 points, while Will Stockhausen added eight, including the 100th of his career. Alex Brendes also has eight points in his last four appearances while extending his goal-scoring streak to 15 straight games dating back to his collegiate debut. That is currently tied for the fifth-longest run in school history.

On the defensive side, Zac Hanway is coming off of an 18-save showcase against Colorado College. That established a new personal-best and equaled the eighth-highest total in school history. Overall this season, he ranks second in the league with a .540 save percentage and a 10.19 goals-against-average.

In addition to Hanway, the entire defense has been solid this season while limiting the opposition to a .273 shooting percentage and ranking 12th in the NCAA in ground balls. The veteran-laden unit includes senior captains Phoenix Hines and Max Wayne, who both rank in the top-10 in the conference in caused turnovers. Fellow fourth-year standout Miles Collins has also been an effective short-stick specialist this season.

On the other side of the field, Mary Washington comes into the weekend on a four-game skid, including an 18-16 setback against Southern Virginia on Tuesday. During that game, J.D. Nozemack posted nine points, including six assists, while Garrett Keough scored four times. The Eagles also won 20 of the 38 faceoffs, including an 11-for-18 showcase by Jake Pyke.

Overall this season, Nozemack leads Mary Washington with 17 goals and 14 assists, while Cameron Walker has contributed 10 goals as well. On the defensive end, Jamin Lane has a team-high 12 caused turnovers to go along with 16 ground balls, while Riley Green has a .418 save percentage and a 17.85 goals-against-average.

In 17 previous meetings between the two programs, Mary Washington holds a 9-8 edge in the series. However, Christopher Newport has won six straight contests, including a 20-6 victory in the 2019 conference tournament. Dylan Rice led the Captains with six points in that playoff showdown, while Jackson Deal handed out three assists.

Following this weekend's contest, Christopher Newport will remain at home for a Wednesday matinee against No. 2 Salisbury beginning at 4 p.m.
