NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The ninth-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will wrap up the regular season on Saturday when the Captains host St. Mary's (Md.) in a Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference bout at 1 p.m. at Jennings Family Stadium.
In addition to polishing off the regular season, Saturday's contest will also serve as the program's annual Senior Day. Prior to the game, Christopher Newport will hold an on-field ceremony to honor the senior members of the team for their contributions to the program over the past four years. The Captains will also welcome back the 2020 seniors and celebrate their time in Newport News, which was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic last spring.
Adhering to the campus COVID-19 guidelines, access to Saturday's game will be limited to two designated family members of each player and coach on Christopher Newport's roster along with a select number of students and staff from the university. Opposing fans and other interested parties will not be permitted to attend the contest. For specific details on the spectator guidelines, please read the athletic department's 2021 spring sports policy, which is available at the top of this release.
For those individuals unable to attend the game, Christopher Newport will provide a broadcast of the action with Jake Myers and Will Geise calling all of the action. Live stats will also be available through CNUsports.com. Direct links to the broadcast and live stats can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Entering the regular season finale, the Captains sit at 9-4 on the season, including 2-1 in league action. Christopher Newport is currently tied with Southern Virginia for second in the conference standings. Meanwhile, St. Mary's (Md.) is fourth in the league after compiling a 3-8 record with a 1-2 mark against conference competition.
After Mary Washington made a decision to cancel the remainder of its season due to COVID-19 complications, the remaining four teams in the conference have already secured a spot in the semifinals of the Coast-to-Coast Tournament, which will take place next Wednesday. The final seedings will be determined following the conclusion of Saturday's action. The top-two teams will host the semifinal games.
Primed to make another playoff run, the 2020 seniors have established themselves as one of the finest collections of talent in Christopher Newport history. Since 2018, the group has helped the Captains register a 41-17 record. Their .707 winning percentage during that span stands as the highest of any class in program lore.
Along the way, this year's senior class has helped Christopher Newport establish itself as one of the top men's lacrosse programs in the nation. Since the seniors arrived on campus, there have been 47 National Polls released by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. The Captains have received votes in all but two of the polls and earned a top-20 ranking on 38 occasions, including a stint at No. 3 in the country.
Among the historic work over the past four years, Christopher Newport advanced to the third round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament, defeated five nationally-ranked teams, and rewrote the program record books with regularity.
Also wrapping up the regular season on Saturday, St. Mary's (Md.) was last in action on April 24 when the Seahawks dropped a 13-4 decision against No. 2 Salisbury. Of their eight losses this season, five have come against nationally-ranked competition. In addition to two losses against the Sea Gulls, SMC has also dropped decisions to No. 4 Lynchburg, No. 16 Hampden-Sydney, and No. 18 Colorado College.
Despite the daunting schedule, St. Mary's ranks first in the conference and fourth in the NCAA in man-down defense. The Seahawks have withstood 90.3 percent of their opposition's extra-man opportunities this season. Among the defensive standouts, DJ Walker sits third in the league with a .495 save percentage and a 13.01 goals-against-average. Tommy Rinder also has 14 takeaways, while Ethan Little and Anthony Sparacino have 10 apiece.
Offensively, Jude Brown and Dominic Venanzi are tied for the team-lead with 32 points apiece. Meanwhile, Abe Hubbard leads the way with 25 goals, including five man-up tallies.
Saturday's bout will mark the 12th all-time meeting between the two programs with St. Mary's holding a 6-5 edge in the series. However, Christopher Newport has won the past five games, including a 14-6 triumph at home in 2019.
