CNU Baseball Continues High Scoring Trend Against League Foes; Captains Drop Seahawks, 13-2

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- Christopher Newport banged out 18 hits and scored 13 runs on Saturday afternoon, cruising to another big conference win at St. Mary's College of Maryland. The Captains have outscored Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference competition, 46-7, through the first four games of league play while improving to 9-4 overall and 4-0 in C2C action.

CNU smacked six doubles, including two each from Kyle Schofield and Jay Cassady. The first two-bagger of the day got Christopher Newport on the board when Cassady plated a pair in the top of the second inning with a deep shot to center field. His first of two doubles scored Michael Martorano and Scott Crosson

The Captains scored three more in the next inning as they took advantage of a pair of Seahawks errors. Conner Clark led off with a single and stole second base for his first of two thefts in the game. He then advanced to third on an infield single and scored on an error. Crosson brought home Jonathan Fisher with an RBI groundout and Kyle Schofield trotted home after the second error of the inning.

Staked to a 5-0 lead after just two and a half innings, senior starter Josh Husby (3-0) settled in and continued his exceptional start to the season. He improved to 3-0 with his fifth consecutive quality start and second straight outing without giving up a run. With six shutout frames against the Seahawks on Saturday, Husby has now recorded 14.1 straight scoreless innings. That run is the longest shutout streak for a starter since Logan Harrelson recorded 16.0 straight over three starts from Feb. 17-March 15, 2018. On Saturday, Husby cruised through the St. Mary's lineup allowing just five hits and one walk while striking out seven.

CNU tacked on five more runs in the fourth to take a 10-0 lead. Cassady opened up the inning with a leadoff double to left center and moved up to third on a single by Clark. After another stolen base and a walk from Fisher, the Captains loaded the bases for Eric O'Brien. The senior backstop walked in a run and Clark raced home on a wild pitch for the second run of the inning. That would set up Schofield, who blistered a 1-1 pitch into left field to score two more. Matt Rhodes delivered an RBI single on a full count next to wrap up the five-run inning that blew open the game.

Schofield added his second RBI double of the game in the fifth and Scott Crosson posted a sacrifice fly to chase home O'Brien and get the Captains on top, 12-0. The final run would score in the top of the ninth when rookie Shane Kelleher ripped an RBI single into right field to plate Alec Reilly. Stepping in to pinch hit for Cassady, Keegan Doyle added a 2-for-2 performance for the Captains. The first basemen combined for a 5-for-6 performance with two RBI and a run scored.

Clark was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases; Fisher and Schofield were each 2-for-4 and Schofield led the team with three RBI and two runs scored.

The two teams will return to action on Sunday to wrap up the short series at 12:00 p.m. Live stats and live video will be available courtesy of SMCM Athletics.
