BUENA VISTA, Va. -- The ninth-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will travel to Southern Virginia on Saturday for a Coast-to-Coast Conference battle beginning at 1 p.m. at Knight Stadium.
Entering the weekend, Christopher Newport sits at 8-4 overall and 5-2 on the road, while Southern Virginia is 6-7 with a 4-3 mark at home.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Knights will not allow visiting fans to attend their home events this spring.
The Captains are coming off of a thrilling 14-13 overtime victory against Washington & Lee on Tuesday. During that marathon,
Alex Brendes came through with seven points, including the game-winner. His late-game heroics were aided by a slew of defenders as
Aidan FitzGerald forced a turnover in the extra session before
Aidan Wheeler cleared the ball and
Phoenix Hines dished out the assist on the clincher.
Overall, FitzGerald finished the contest with four ground balls, while
Max Wayne had a pair of takeaways.
Zac Hanway also chipped in with nine saves. Offensively, Brendes was joined by
Robby Adams, who collected a hat-trick.
Coby Auslander added three points, including a pair of strikes, as well.
So far this season,
Brady Altobello ranks fifth in the conference with 28 goals, while Hanway is second with a .515 save percentage. Hines, Wayne, and
Ryan Young all rank among the top-five in takeaways as well. As a team, the Captains are averaging 12 caused turnovers per game, and their 145 total takeaways lead the league by a wide margin.
Meanwhile, Southern Virginia comes into the weekend riding a three-game winning streak. The Knights set aside St. Mary's (Md.) and Mary Washington in back-to-back league bouts, including an 18-15 win over the Eagles last week. During that battle, Zach Danneman posted six goals for the hosts, while Tennison Schmidt contributed six assists. Dalon Hampshire also added 19 saves on the defensive end.
Overall this season, SVU ranks third in the nation in saves (205), fifth in ground balls (479), and seventh in assists (115). On an individual level, Danneman is averaging 4.62 goals-per-game, which stands as the 15th-best rate in the country. Hampshire's 184 saves are also tied for the third-most in the NCAA.
Saturday's game will mark the 10th all-time meeting between the two programs. Christopher Newport currently holds a 9-0 edge in the series, including a 16-6 triumph at Jennings Family Stadium earlier this year. During that bout, Brendes led the Captains with four goals, while Danneman had a hat-trick for the visitors.
Following this weekend's contest, Christopher Newport will return to action on May 1 when the squad hosts St. Mary's (Md.) on Senior Day at 1 p.m. The team's previously-scheduled game against Mary Washington on April 28 has been postponed due to COVID protocols.
