Wesley Defeats Captains, 23-7, in Friday Football Finale

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Wesley College defeated Christopher Newport University, 23-7, in the final football game of the spring season for the Captains. The New Jersey Athletic Conference matchup at TowneBank Stadium Friday afternoon marked the first home game for CNU since November 9, 2019, due to the CoVID pandemic.

The Wolverines, now 2-1, broke a scoreless tie midway through the second quarter thanks to a 2-yard touchdown run from Latrell McCants. After holding a 6-0 edge at halftime, Wesley extended the lead to 23-0 with 17 second half points. McCants scored again in the third quarter on a 10-yard scamper, and Deandre Davis later connected on a 36-yard field goal. Brady Walters threw a 15-yard scoring strike to Devin Curry in the fourth quarter to push the lead to 23-0.

The Captains averted a shutout thanks to a defensive score. Freshman Shawn Hamilton recovered a Wesley fumble and returned the ball 26 yards for a score with 5:23 to play in the fourth quarter to conclude the scoring in the 23-7 defeat.

Sophomore Jaiquan Findley caught six passes for 57 yards for Christopher Newport, and also ran the ball nine times for 24 yards. Sophomore starting quarterback Xander Jedlick completed 12 of 23 passes for 118 yards, and junior quarterback Scotty Forbes rushed eight times for 38 yards.

McCants led the Wolverines with 91 rushing yards on 16 carries with two scores. Wesley quarterback Brady Walters completed 15 of 28 passes for 129 yards and a score.

Christopher Newport's spring season came to a close after just two games due to CoVID protocols. The Captains lost their only other game, 30-5, at Salisbury on March 21st.

Eight seniors on the Captains roster were honored prior to kickoff on a sunny and chilly Friday at TowneBank Stadium. Grayson Bond, Brandon Decker, Brett Bradshaw, Jake Herzog, Ibrahim Toure, Brett McDonald, Joe Humphreys, and Kaden Woodward were introduced prior to their final action in a Christopher Newport uniform.

Friday's contest was the 200th all-time in CNU football history and the eighth and final meeting with Wesley College. Wesley, located in Dover, Delaware, was acquired by Delaware State University, which announced recently that Wesley athletics will be discontinued following the current school year.
