NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team moved up one spot in the most recent USILA National Coaches Poll as the Captains were ranked eighth ahead of Wednesday's top-10 showdown with No. 2 Salisbury at Jennings Family Stadium.

In the poll, Christopher Newport earned 239 points while remaining in the top-10 for the fourth straight week. Overall, the Captains have been ranked in the top-20 in each of the last 14 polls dating back to last season.

Along with Christopher Newport, Salisbury was ranked second in the national poll while picking up a pair of first-place votes. Former 2021 foes Lynchburg, Hampden-Sydney, and Colorado College also remained in the top-20, slotting 5th, 18th, and 19th, respectively.

Adding another nationally-ranked showdown to their ledger, the Captains will host Salisbury in a rematch on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Entering the contest, Christopher Newport sits at 7-3 on the year, including 2-1 against league competition. Meanwhile, Salisbury is 8-1 overall and 4-0 in Coast-to-Coast Conference play.

Adhering to the campus COVID-19 guidelines, access to Wednesday's game will be limited to two designated family members of each player and coach on Christopher Newport's roster along with a select number of students and staff from the university. Opposing fans and other interested parties will not be permitted to attend the contest. For specific details on the spectator guidelines, please read the athletic department's 2021 spring sports policy, which is available at the top of this release.

For those individuals unable to attend the game, Christopher Newport will provide a broadcast of the contest with Andy McGregor and Jake Myers calling all of the action. Live stats will also be available through CNUsports.com. Direct links to the broadcast and live stats can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

The Captains are coming off a 16-7 victory over Mary Washington on Saturday. During that game, 11 different players registered at least one point, including a career-high six from Robby Adams. Will Stockhausen also contributed a hat-trick, while Dylan Rice and Alex Brendes added multi-goal efforts as well.

On the other side of the field, Jack Cook was celebrated as the Coast-to-Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week after forcing three turnovers while adding his first goal of the season against the Eagles. Phoenix Hines also chipped in with three takeaways, while Zack Sands controlled possession with a 15-for-18 showcase at the 'x.' His 15 faceoff victories marked a new career-high.

Aided by Sands' work on faceoffs, Christopher Newport currently ranks eighth in the nation with 386 ground balls this season. On an individual level, Sands is third in the league with 52 rollers, while Ryan Young is sixth with 38. Hines also has 24 ground balls and ranks second in the conference with 19 takeaways.

Salisbury enters Wednesday on an eight-game winning streak. The Sea Gulls were last in action on April 7 when the squad beat St. Mary's (Md.), 14-6. The Seahawks cut their deficit down to one midway through the third quarter, but the hosts eventually scored eight of the game's final nine goals to pull away for the lopsided triumph.

SU has continued to flash a high-powered attack this year as the team is averaging 20.44 goals per game while converting 58 percent of its man-up opportunities. Both of those marks rank eighth in the NCAA. Leading the way, Cross Ferrara is fifth in the nation with 48 goals, while Josh Melton is second with 31 assists. Jarrett Broomwell is also eighth with 37 total goals and seventh with six man-up tallies.

In the last meeting between the two programs, Salisbury upended the Captains, 25-12, in Maryland. Broomwell led the way with nine points, including seven goals, for the victors. Meanwhile, Brendes had a hat-trick for Christopher Newport. On the defensive side, Cook, Max Wayne, and Brandon Young combined for five takeaways on the back line, while Ryan Young added a pair of ground balls.

After Wednesday's tilt, Christopher Newport will return to action on April 20 with a 7 p.m. battle at Washington & Lee.
