Bullpen Shines but Offense Slowed Against Salisbury in Weekend Finale; Captains Baseball Falls, 7-2

SALISBURY, Md. -- The Christopher Newport relief pitchers combined to allow just one run on four hits over five innings of work but the Salisbury University attack had already done enough damage and the home team picked up a 7-2 win over the Captains on Saturday.

The CNU bullpen took over in the fourth inning when Colby Shriner was the first of five relievers to take the hill. After Salisbury notched one run against Shriner in the fourth, the Captains got clean innings from Nathan Clements, Connor Pennell, Jack Braley, and Jack Rosenberg. Pennell and Rosenberg each tossed perfect innings, facing just three batters, while Braley and Clements worked around base runners to keep the score close.

The Christopher Newport offense sputtered just one day after scoring a season-high 10 runs against the Sea Gulls pitching staff. Sophomore Kyle Schofield continued to stay hot, however, delivering his fifth multi-hit game in the last seven contests. He has a seven-game hitting streak rolling and went 5-for-12 against the Sea Gulls in three games this week.

CNU fell to 10-7 overall and 5-3 in conference play with the Sea Gulls improving to 12-2, 6-1.

Salisbury scored twice in the bottom of the first with an RBI single from Kavi Caster and a sacrifice fly by Hyder. Caster then added an RBI single in the second as the Salisbury lead grew to 3-0. The Captains cut the lead to one, 3-2, with a pair of runs crossing the plate in the top of the third. Both were chased home as unearned runs when an error extended the inning and allowed Scott Crosson to reach.

CNU will next take on nationally-ranked North Carolina Wesleyan for a home game on Wednesday, April 14 at 3:00 pm.
