SALEM, Va. -- The 13th-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will travel to Roanoke on Saturday for a non-conference test beginning at 4 p.m. at Donald J. Kerr Stadium.
Coming into the weekend, the Captains currently sit at 2-0 with a 1-0 mark on the road. The Maroons boast a 1-0 record with their lone victory coming at home last week against William Peace.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Roanoke has restricted access to its campus, and visiting fans will not be permitted to attend Saturday's contest. However, the Maroons will provide live stats and a video stream of the action at RoanokeMaroons.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Through two games, Christopher Newport has displayed a well-balanced squad with standouts at nearly every facet of the game. Offensively, 11 different Captains have already scored a goal and seven have at least three strikes. Leading the way,
Brady Altobello has contributed a hat-trick in both of his appearances this season, while reigning National Freshman of the Year
Alex Brendes also has six goals, including four on Wednesday against Southern Virginia.
Helping pace the attack,
Drew Miller is tied for second on the squad with six points while compiling a team-high three assists. Meanwhile,
Dylan Rice also has three tallies and enters the weekend tied atop the program's all-time goals list. The senior has 126 career strikes, which equals the school record set by former teammate Matt Crist from 2015-18.
Also inching towards history,
Phoenix Hines is one takeaway shy of matching
Drew Cornell's program record of 102 career caused turnovers.
Max Wayne is also five away from Cornell's record and has an opportunity to establish another school standard on Saturday. Entering the weekend, Wayne has started 47 consecutive games, which is tied for the longest Iron Man streak in program history. Current assistant coach
Matt Hayden also started 47 straight from 2015-17.
In addition to Hines and Wayne, the Captains have received other impressive contributions from the defense in 2021.
Ryan Young and
Campbell Pozin are tied for the team lead with four takeaways apiece. Pozin was named to the USILA National Team of the Week for his work in the opener last Friday, while Young contributed three caused turnovers and three ground balls in the squad's win over Southern Virginia.
On the other side of the field, Roanoke kicked off its 2021 campaign with a 25-8 win over William Peace last Saturday. Ethan Caldwell posted eight points during the victory, including five assists. Luke Kammerman also had four goals and two helpers to pace the attack. Meanwhile, Austin Gambino excelled on faceoffs with a 25-for-33 effort while snatching eight ground balls.
In the cage for the Maroons, four different players saw action in the opener. Matt Federau led the way with four saves during the first half to earn the victory.
In six previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a 4-2 edge in the series. Last year, the Captains picked up a 24-12 triumph in Salem. Brendes, Rice,
Will Stockhausen, and
Coby Auslander all had five points apiece during the win.
Following this weekend's game, Christopher Newport will return to action on March 13 with a 3 p.m. battle at Washington (Md.).
