The game Friday will mark the 200th in the history of the Christopher Newport football program, which dates back to 2001. The Captains have recorded an overall record of 123-76 all-time for a winning percentage of .618. Friday's contest will be the eighth and final meeting with Wesley College. The school, located in Dover, Delaware, was acquired by Delaware State University, which announced recently that Wesley athletics will be discontinued following the current school year.
The Wolverines, coached by Chris Knapp, lead the series with the Captains, 5-2, and are 1-1 this spring with a win in their last game at Montclair State (20-13), which followed a loss at home to Salisbury (32-30). Knapp is in his third season as head coach and 30th season at Wesley, and was a longtime assistant to Mike Drass, who led the program to national prominence prior to his death.
The game will be the first for the Captains at TowneBank Stadium since November 9, 2019, when Christopher Newport lost to Rowan, 27-23. One week later, on November 16, 2019, the Captains traveled to Dover to take on Wesley. The Wolverines registered a 42-7 victory over the Captains in the last meeting of the two schools. Christopher Newport has recorded a 64-32 record all-time at TowneBank Stadium for a winning clip of .667. Both wins over the Wolverines in the series have come on the Captains home turf.
Christopher Newport's scheduled game at Stevenson has been canceled, resulting in just a two game spring season for the Captains. Eight seniors on the Captains roster will be honored prior to kickoff on Friday.Â
