NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After a week off, the Christopher Newport baseball team will be back in action this Saturday, March 27 as they host Southern Virginia University (0-4, 0-0) in Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference action for a twin bill at Captains Park. First pitch of game one is slated for Noon.
The Captains enter Saturday's doubleheader with a 6-4 overall record and a 1-0 start in C2C action. Last weekend, Christopher Newport captured game one of the conference season, 13-3, at Mary Washington before the second game of the series was postponed due to CoVID protocols.
In accordance with the Christopher Newport spectator policy, a limited number of fans will be permitted to attend. For fans unable to attend in person, live stats and a live video webcast will be available with links at the top of this page and on the baseball schedule.
Entering the matchup against the Knights, the Captains feature one of the league's top offenses, ranking second in scoring with 6.4 runs per game, and top pitching staffs, ranking second with a 3.84 ERA. Offensively, sophomore
Ethan Weaver paces the Captains attack with a .444 average with nine runs scored and eight walks. Senior

As a team, the Captains pitching staff has 97 strikeouts in 89.0 innings of work this season. Senior
Josh Husby (1-0) has a 1.35 ERA with 17 strikeouts in 20 IP while rookie
Jay Cassady (0-1) has added 14 K's in 11.0 innings tossed. In the bullpen, veteran
Nathan Clements has led a strong overall effort in four appearances with six strikeouts in 5.1 innings.
Matt Gaither (2-1, 1 SV) leads all pitchers with six appearances while
Danny Checkosky and
Jack Rosenberg have also appeared five times.
Southern Virginia has scored eight runs in four games with Tyler Callens leading the charge hitting .400 with three doubles and an RBI. Will Parker has started two games and boasts a 1.80 ERA with three strikeouts.
Following Saturday's doubleheader, Christopher Newport will next travel to William Peace for a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 31.
