LYNCHBURG, Va. --
For the second time in a week, Christopher Newport and Lynchburg will square off in a nationally-ranked men's lacrosse battle as the No. 3 Captains travel to the No. 5 Hornets for a Friday night showdown beginning at 7 p.m. at Shellenberger Field.

Entering the contest, Christopher Newport sits at 6-0 on the season, including 4-0 in road tilts. Lynchburg is 5-1 with a pristine 4-0 mark at home.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Lynchburg is not allowing fans of visiting teams to attend games at Shellenberg Field this spring. However, the Hornets will provide live stats and a video stream of the action at LynchburgSports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

Last Saturday, the two programs met for the first time since 2012 and put on a thrilling display for the fans at Jennings Family Stadium. During the contest, the score was tied four times, including 9-9 at the end of regulation. Fortunately for the hosts, after Zack Sands forced an early turnover in overtime, Alex Brendes came through with the game-winner in the 61st minute to seal the win.

Along with Brendes, six other Captains found the back of the net against the Hornets, including Brady Altobello, who posted six points. The junior landed four goals and a pair of assists while earning a spot on the USILA National Team of the Week for the second time this season.

In addition to the offensive heroes, Ryan Young forced four turnovers and was named the Coast-to-Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Phoenix Hines also added three takeaways, while Burke Widhelm had a pair. Meanwhile, between the pipes, Zac Hanway came through with six crucial saves to earn the victory.

Overall this season, Hanway ranks second in the league with a 6.69 goals-against-average and a .590 save percentage. Meanwhile, Hines ranks first among conference competitors with 15 takeaways, and Young sits second with 13.

During last weekend's match-up, Lynchburg was led by Kyle Lewis, who contributed three points, including a pair of assists. Brett Rogers also struck twice for the Hornets, and Quintin Ricci won 13 of the game's 21 faceoffs. He also collected nine ground balls and scored once against the Captains.

Overall this season, Lewis and Rogers are tied for the team-lead with 22 points apiece. Colin Dean also has 15 goals. Defensively, Chris Darminio has 10 caused turnovers and 18 ground balls, while Patrick Moore has compiled a .551 save percentage and a 7.39 goals-against-average.

Friday's match-up will mark the fifth all-time meeting between the two programs with Lynchburg holding a 3-1 edge in the series.

After Friday, Christopher Newport will return to action next Saturday when the squad travels to No. 4 Salisbury for a league bout beginning at 4 p.m.
