NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 11th-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will put its five-game winning streak on the line when the Captains host No. 2 Lynchburg in a nationally-ranked showdown beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Jennings Family Stadium.

Entering the contest, both the Captains and Hornets boast 5-0 records. Additionally, Christopher Newport is 1-0 at home, while Lynchburg is 1-0 on the road.

Adhering to the campus COVID-19 guidelines, access to Saturday's game will be limited to two designated family members of each player and coach on Christopher Newport's roster along with a select number of students and staff from the university. Opposing fans and other interested parties will not be permitted to attend the contest. For those individuals unable to attend the game, Christopher Newport will provide a broadcast of the action with Jake Myers and Will Geise calling all of the action. Saturday's tilt will feature a pair of squads that are evenly-matched in several statistical categories. Entering the weekend, Christopher Newport ranks 13th in the nation with an 18.2 goals-per-game average. Lynchburg is 11th with a 19.2 mark. The Captains are 23rd in scoring defense, allowing only 6.8 goals per contest. The Hornets are 17th with a 6.2 average.

Meanwhile, both programs sit in the top-10 nationally in ground balls and assists. Additionally, Christopher Newport is 10th in the country with a .371 shooting percentage, and Lynchburg is 12th in clearing percentage with a stellar .888 success rate.

In their most recent outing, the Captains stormed past Randolph-Macon, 24-8. The 24 goals equaled the most by the program since a 29-5 win over Southern Virginia on April 4, 2015. Meanwhile, Wednesday's victory also marked the squad's fourth consecutive double-digit triumph, marking the longest run in school history.

Headlining the midweek win, Phoenix Hines registered five takeaways, which pushed his career total to 107. That established a new school record, passing Drew Cornell's previous standard of 102. Meanwhile, Max Wayne also tied Cornell's mark on Wednesday after notching his 102nd caused turnover. Fittingly, the senior scored his first career goal with a 55-yard missile in the second quarter as well.

On the offensive side, Dylan Rice registered his third consecutive hat-trick after finishing with five goals against the Yellow Jackets. Alex Brendes also scored four times during the win, marking his 11th straight game with a goal dating back to his collegiate debut last season. That currently stands as the 10th-longest scoring streak in program history.

Looking to put a lid on Christopher Newport's well-balanced attack, Lynchburg comes to town on an identical five-game winning streak this season. The Hornets also boast four double-digit victories, which bookend a thrilling 10-8 triumph over No. 1 Salisbury on March 8.

Quintin Ricci has controlled possession throughout the season for Lynchburg, winning 66 percent of his faceoff attempts. That currently ranks 24th in the country. The senior also stands 26th in the NCAA with an 8.00 ground-balls-per-game average.

On the offensive end, the Hornets have been led by Colin Dean, who boasts 14 goals, and Brett Rogers, who has 11 assists and 20 total points. Meanwhile, between the pipes, sophomore Patrick Moore has started all five games and currently sports a .561 save percentage and a 6.71 goals-against-average.

Saturday's meeting is only the fourth time the two programs have squared off in men's lacrosse with Lynchburg holding a 3-0 edge in the series. The last showdown came in 2012 when the third-ranked Hornets topped the Captains, 16-6. Putting that into perspective, current head coach Mikey Thompson was just beginning his career as an assistant when that game took place. Meanwhile, among the student-athletes who participated in that game, longtime broadcaster Jake Myers saw action as a junior midfielder before transitioning to the broadcast booth three years later.

Following Saturday's game, the Captains will return to action with a rematch against the nationally-ranked Hornets in Lynchburg on March 26 at 7 p.m. Christopher Newport's previously-scheduled game against Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday has been canceled due to COVID protocols at VWU.
