DANVILLE, Va. -- Christopher Newport knocked down 58.2% of its shots and scored 68 points in the paint during a 108-58 exhibition victory at Averett University (4-8) on Saturday afternoon. The Captains scored 63 first-half points in the rout as all 14 players got into the scoring column for CNU.
Rookie
Alivia Giles led all scorers with 17 points to headline a group of four Captains in double figures. Fellow freshman
Camille Malagar added 13, sophomore
Anaya Simmons dropped in 11 and junior
Julia Ng finished with 10 points to help lead the Captains dominant offensive performance.
In the matchup, all 14 Captains played 10 minutes or more and no one was on the floor for more than 20 minutes. Junior
Julia Hobbs led the way in minutes played with 20 and she finished with eight points on a perfect 4-for-4 effort from the field.
CNU raced out to a big lead, missing just four shots in a stanza that saw the Captains bury 13-of-17 from the field for a torrid 76.5% from the field. After knocking down 13-of-21 in the second quarter, Christopher Newport finished the first half with 26 made field goals and a red-hot 68% shooting effort in the first 20 minutes of action.
While the offense impressed, the Captains defense was equally sound, forcing 38 Averett turnovers and scoring 50 points off of those takeaways. CNU recorded 22 steals led by four from Giles.
This Wednesday, March 3 the Christopher Newport women's basketball team will return to action on the road against Southern Virginia University. TIp at Knights Sports Arena is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
