Captains Football to Begin Play in March...Schedule Released by New Jersey Athletic Conference

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport University football squad will play four times in the month of March following an announcement Friday from the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). The Captains, who began practice sessions earlier this week, will play twice at home and twice on the road and the competitions will include an opening scrimmage followed by three conference games.

"It's so exciting to be getting ready for competition," Head Coach Art Link said. "Our team has really embraced this spring season and now we know what's coming up. I think we'll have some very competitive contests and all of our coaches and student-athletes can't wait to get it started."

The NJAC's Board of Athletic Administrators, in coordination with the administration at each of its full-member and associate football member institutions, announced a plan that will utilize a divisional structure to provide its football student-athletes with a limited competition season during March. The season will begin the weekend of March 6-7 with each participating program engaging in a scrimmage against a fellow conference opponent.

Link's Captains will open on Sunday, March 7th, at Towne Bank Stadium with a scrimmage vs. Salisbury at 2:00 p.m.

League play will then officially begin the following weekend with the first countable contests taking place during the weekend of March 13-14. Each team will also participate in two more weekends of league play with the NJAC season concluding the weekend of March 27-28.

Christopher Newport will play road games at William Paterson on Saturday, March 13th, at 11:30 a.m., and at Salisbury on Sunday, March 21st, at 6:00 p.m. The mini conference season will conclude at Towne Bank Stadium on Sunday, March 28th, as the Captains host Wesley in a 4:00 p.m. start.

The NCAA Sport Science Institute Resocialization Recommendations for the Return to Sport will be followed in adherence with the NJAC competition plan that has been developed for football. Under the league scheduling model, each team will play one game against its divisional opponents, as well as one game against a cross divisional opponent. Only games against divisional opponents will count in the conference standings. Christopher Newport will be a member of the South Division along with Salisbury and Wesley. The North Division will consist of William Paterson, Montclair State, and Kean.

Teams will compete for divisional championships, and divisional all-conference honors and league awards will be selected at the conclusion of the season.

Decisions about campus spectator policies will be made by each institution at a later date.

More information on the spring football schedule will be released in the coming weeks on CNUsports.com.
