The Sea Gulls, receiving votes in the D3hoops.com national rankings, cut the Captains first-half lead down to one at the break and carried that momentum into a dominant second-half showing to capture the road win. Kaylee Otlowski scored 23 points and added 12 rebounds for a double-double while also adding six blocks to lead the way for Salisbury.
The two teams teetered through the first quarter until Christopher Newport used a 10-2 run at the end of the frame to take a six-point advantage, 19-13. In the burst, junior
Phylicia McInnis had a nice sequence that included a pair of fast-break buckets and a steal in the span of just 12 seconds.
Julia Hobbs and
Natalie Terwilliger each added stick-back scores in the run while
Sondra Fan sunk a runner off the right side of the iron to close the 10-point swing for the Captains.
The Captains shot 40% in the first half and 36% in the second. The Christopher Newport defense forced 27 turnovers with 15 steals.
Julia Ng led the way with three while five other players each recorded two.
The next opponent on the exhibition schedule is Marymount University (0-0), appearing in their first action of 2020-21 this Monday, February 15 at 5:30 p.m. The matchup will be played in the Freeman Center; due to the COVID-19 game protocol, no spectators will be allowed throughout the 2020-21 season. The game will be streamed live by CNU athletics with live stats also available.
