NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Continuing an impressive run on both sides of the ball, the sixth-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team capitalized on a swarming defense and an electric effort on the offensive end to storm past Meredith, 104-48, during a non-conference battle on Saturday afternoon at the Freeman Center.
During the contest,
Sondra Fan continued her incredible senior campaign. Against the Avenging Angels, she posted 23 points, six steals, and five assists. With her well-rounded showcase, the Preseason All-American became the first Captain in nearly eight years to register at least 20 points, five assists, and five steals in a single game. All-American Tia Perry was the last player to accomplish that feat after erupting for 20 points, five dimes, and five swipes against York (Pa.) on February 1, 2014.
In fact, Fan became just the fifth Captain in the last 20 years to reach those marks in a single game. Along with Fan and Perry, Christopher Newport Hall of Famer Chelsie Schweers and legendary stars Tomorrow Lofton and Amber Hallman were the only other players to accomplish that feat since 2000.
Overall, Fan's six steals equaled her career-high, while her 23 points marked the third-highest total of her decorated tenure.
Along with Fan's historic performance,
Gabbi San Diego handed out a career-high eight assists, while
Anaya Simmons deposited 20 points.
Hannah Kaloi also dropped in 15 points for the second straight game. The freshman star was perfect from the field, going 5-for-5 against Meredith. With that performance, she became the first Captain to take at least five shots from the field and convert all of her attempts since Fan was 5-for-5 against St. Mary's (Md.) on February 19, 2019.
Coupled with their 118-43 win over William Peace on Wednesday, the Captains also eclipsed 100 points for the second straight game. That marked just the second time in school history that Christopher Newport scored at least 100 points in two consecutive outings. Previously, only the 1996-97 squad had accomplished that feat after running off three straight 100-point appearances from November 26, 1996 through December 3, 1996.
Meanwhile, on the defensive side, Christopher Newport induced 41 turnovers while registering 26 steals and nine blocks.
Katy Rader was a dominant force on the defensive end with five steals and three blocks, while
Natalie Terwilliger had four swipes and three rejections.
With the victory, the Captains improved to 9-0 on the season and extended their winning streak to 26 consecutive games dating back to the 2019-20 campaign. That stands as the second-longest run in school history, just four shy of matching the mark set by the 2009-10 team on the way to an appearance in the NCAA Sweet 16.
On the other end, the setback dropped Meredith to 0-6 on the season.
In the opening quarter, Terwilliger set the tone. On the defensive side, the senior star poked the ball away on Meredith's first possession before coming back with a pair of rejections less than two minutes into regulation. She also cleaned the glass with a put-back on the offensive side before adding another layup to snatch an early 6-5 lead. Later, after the Avenging Angels took a modest advantage after converting a pair of free throws, the Captains found their rhythm.
Simmons scored five straight points, including a textbook 2-on-1 break with Terwilliger to secure a 15-9 edge. Shortly thereafter, Fan and
Jessica Foster hit from beyond the arc to help steal a 23-14 lead at the end of the opening period.
In the second quarter, Fan put on a show. During the middle of the stanza, the senior dropped in 10 straight points, including a pair of long-range daggers, to push the lead to 39-16. Later, Kaloi had three straight buckets and sank a pair of free throws for her own eight-point surge during an impressive two-minute window.
Meanwhile, the defense was equally effective. San Diego grabbed a pair of steals during Fan's epic run, while Rader suffocated the opposition with a takeaway and two rejections. Later, San Diego flashed her offensive skills as well with a highlight-reel assist in the waning moments of the half. The second-year star threaded a full-court pass through a host of defenders to Simmons, who snatched the feed on the run and finished the fast break with a layup to help grab a 56-26 lead entering halftime.
Following the break, Fan put her speed on full display. Early in the third quarter, she stole a pass from Meredith and outran everyone on the court for an uncontested layup. Shortly thereafter, Simmons and
Phylicia McInnis also added buckets in the paint, while Kaloi,
Hannah Orloff, and
Alivia Giles all took advantage from the charity stripe to push the advantage to 77-40 after 30 minutes of action.
With little left to prove, Christopher Newport eased into the victory during the fourth quarter. Fan, Terwilliger, and Simmons all converted early layups before Rader and
Lexi White stepped up with an outstanding run. Rader had five points and two steals in just over a minute of action. Her final basket from the field came off a beautiful feed from White as the freshman dropped a perfect rainbow over the defense to set up the score.
In addition to her assist, White also had three steals, four points, and another helper over the final five minutes of regulation to help put a punctuation mark on the 104-48 victory.
During the game, Rader stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, five steals, three blocks, and three assists. Simmons also had two swipes and a pair of rejections to go along with her 20 points.
Overall, the Captains shot 57 percent from the field, marking their second-highest rate of the season. The squad's 26 steals and nine blocks were also the second-most in a game in 2021.
Christopher Newport will return to action on December 12 when the Captains host Marymount in a 2 p.m. tilt at the Freeman Center.
