NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team will look to continue it's season-opening momentum on Saturday, December 4 as they play host to Meredith College (0-5) at 2:00 p.m. in the Freeman Center. The Captains (8-0) have won 25 straight games heading into the matchup, which will be played as the front end of a doubleheader with the men's team taking on Averett at 4:00 pm.
Coming off a record-breaking 118-43 win over William Peace University on Wednesday, the nationally-ranked Captains' continue to impress both offensively and defensively this season. Raising the team's scoring average to 95.5 points per game, the Captains now rank third nationally in scoring offense. CNU also moved up to third nationally in steals per game (19.4) and turnovers forced (33.62).Â

Senior guard
Sondra Fan leads the offense with 14.4 points per game despite playing just 17.3 minutes per contest while knocking down 53.5% of her shots. She is coming off back-to-back 19-point performances that surged her ahead of the 800-point plateau in just her third season with the Captains. All three of the Captains' leading scorers are shooting at a high clip this season as junior
Anaya Simmons leads the squad with a 61.9% mark while scoring 11.1 points per game while
Natalie Terwilliger is knocking down 52.3% of her attempts and averaging 11.0 points per game.Â
While the top three are averaging double figures, CNU is getting contributions from the entire roster.
Jovia Winkey is adding 8.0 points per game while freshmen
Hannah Kaloi and
Hannah Orloff have settled into the rotation quickly averaging 7.5 and 7.1 points per game, respectively. Orloff also leads the team in blocked shots with 15 through the first seven games.Â
Meredith is led by junior forward Kate Perko scoring 17.4 points per game this season. She is the only Avenging Angel in double figures and also leads the team in rebounding with 12.8 rebounds per game.Â
Following Saturday's matchup, the Captains will return to play after final exams on Sunday, December 12 against Marymount University. Tip against the Saints is set for 2:00 p.m.
