NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University moved into the top 25 national rankings this week, thanks to an overtime victory last Sunday over top-ranked and previously undefeated Randolph-Macon College. John Krikorian's Captains are slotted 17th in the country, and will play the Cougars of Averett University Saturday. Tipoff time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the Freeman Center.

CNU came from behind on Sunday, erasing a 13-point halftime Randolph-Macon lead, and then prevailing in the extra period for a 77-76 triumph. Sophomore Jahn Hines was selected the Player of the Week in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference for his outstanding play last weekend, and contributed nine points, 11 rebounds, and three assists vs. R-MC. Fifth-year senior Jason Aigner and junior Matt Brodie each scored 16 in the impressive victory that raised the Captains record to 5-2 for the year.

Averett University enters Saturday's contest with a 1-4 mark, and the Cougars are coming off their first win of the season, a 78-64 decision over Shenandoah in Danville on Sunday. CNU and Averett were longtime rivals in the Dixie and USA South Athletic Conferences. Saturday's battle will be the 89th of the schools all-time, with the Captains holding a 71-17 advantage. CNU has won the last seven games in the series, with the last coming in the USA South Athletic Conference tournament in Fayetteville, N.C., in 2013, a 74-58 Captains triumph.

Tickets for Saturday's game will be available at the Freeman Center ticket office. All CNU games are broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning 20 minutes prior to tipoff.
