ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Christopher Newport women's basketball opens a nine-game road trip on Wednesday as the nationally-ranked Captains travel to North Carolina Wesleyan College (4-6) for a 3:00 pm tip. The Captains (10-0) are riding a 27-game winning streak heading into the matchup.
CNU has scored 90 or more points in six of the last seven games and feature the second ranked scoring offense in the nation, averaging 96.1 points per game this season. Despite playing only 15.5 minutes per game during the Captains' four-game homestand,
Sondra Fan has been a catalyst for that offense averaging 20.5 points per game in that stretch. The senior guard is shooting 73.2% over the past four games to lead the torrid CNU lineup.
As a team, the Captains' offense is clicking at an unprecedented rate, leading the nation in field-goal percentage and ranking in the top-five in assist per game. CNU has been routinely finding the open shot and knocking it down this season with nearly every player contributing on both ends of the floor. Ten different Christopher Newport players are averaging 6.3 points per game or more as the depth has been more evident than ever before.
Defensively, the usual Captains Chaos pressure has forced 340 turnovers through the first ten games of the season and Christopher Newport is scoring well over 40 points per game off of opponent giveaways. CNU is averaging nearly 20 steals per game, led by Fan with 3.2 per contest.
CNU will take on a North Carolina Wesleyan squad that is led by junior forward Kayrisma Harrison. Averaging a double-double with 12.1 points and 12.0 rebounds per game, Harrison ranks tenth in the nation in rebounding so far this season.
The game will be the last before the holiday break for Christopher Newport, who will return to action on December 29 and 30 at the Susan Dunagan Holiday Classic hosted by Roanoke College.
