NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The last opportunity to see the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team at home until late January is this Sunday, December 12 as the undefeated Captains (9-0) host Marymount University (5-5) at 2:00 p.m. The game will be played as part of a doubleheader with the CNU men, who will face Lynchburg at 4:00 p.m.
The streaking Captains, ranked No. 5 in the WBCA National Rankings and No. 9 in the D3hoops.com Top 25, have won 26 straight games including all nine contests this year. CNU will look to make it ten in a row against a formidable adversary as Marymount owns a 22-17 advantage in the all-time series.Â
The Sunday matinee serves as the fourth straight home game for the Captains as they set out for nine straight contests away from the Freeman Center following Sunday's action. CNU's next home game is not slated until January 29 against Mary Washington as one of just two regular season home games after the first of the year. Christopher Newport will look to expand on a dominant run at home as the team is in the midst of the second-longest home winning streak in program history. With 26 straight wins at the Freeman Center dating back to mid-December 2018, the Captains have improved to 237-38 all-time.Â
While the defense continues it's annual trend of dominance, the Captains' offense is clicking at an unprecedented clip so far this season. Coming off back-to-back 100-point performances for just the second time in CNU Women's Basketball history, the Captains now lead the nation in team field-goal percentage while ranking second nationally in scoring offense. Not to be outdone, the CNU defense leads the nation steals per game while also ranking fourth nationally in blocked shots per game.Â
The well-rounded performance this season has included terrific ball control as CNU is averaging over 19 assists per game and boasts the nation's third-ranked assist-to-turnover margin with a 1.3 mark.Â
Live stats and a live video webcast will be available for all the action on Sunday, with tip set for 2:00 pm. Following the contest, Christopher Newport will hit the road to take on North Carolina Wesleyan on Wednesday, December 15 at 3:00 pm.Â
