NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University won for the second straight time to start the season Sunday, outlasting 14th-ranked Johns Hopkins, 64-62. The Captains withstood a late rally by the Blue Jays to give Head Coach
John Krikorian his 300th career victory.
Sophomore transferÂ
Trey Barber led the way for CNU, recording a double-double with 17 points and ten rebounds, and also rejected five shots. Freshman
Ty Henderson added 14 points and sophomore
Jahn Hines also reached double digits with 12 points.
Christopher Newport held a 33-28 lead at halftime, and built the lead to as many as a dozen in the second half. A layup by Barber with 4:12 remaining in the second half gave the Captains a 59-47 advantage, leading to a furious comeback by the Blue Jays. Johns Hopkins rallied with a 15-5 run down the stretch, powered by eight points from fifth-year senior All-American Conner Delaney, who finished with a game-high 32 points. Delaney missed a potential game-tying jumper as time expired as the Captains held on for the victory.
"Johns Hopkins is a terrific program and we knew we'd be in for a battle today," Krikorian said. "They really did a lot of good things in the final minutes to climb back into it and push us to the limit."Â Krikorian is in his 11th season leading the Captains, and previously guided the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy for four years. He now has an overall coaching record of 300-101, and coached his 400th career game on Friday night when the Captains opened the season with a 102-37 victory over Washington College (Md.).
Both teams shot just under 40 percent from the field for the day, and the Captains held a 43-41 edge on the boards. CNU turned the ball over just ten times to 14 turnovers committed by the Jays. Johns Hopkins used just eight players, and got no points off the bench, while the Captains six bench players used scored a total of 27 points.Â
Christopher Newport travels to Salem, Va., this weekend for a two-day tournament at Roanoke College. CNU plays third-ranked Marietta on Friday in the opening round with tipoff time set for 8:00 p.m.
