NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Taking the court officially for the first time in 609 days, the Christopher Newport women's basketball team will welcome Southern Virginia University for the season opener at the Freeman Center on Saturday, November 5 at 2:00 pm.
Season tickets are available for purchase over the phone or in person at the Freeman Center ticket office. Individual game tickets are $10 for chairback seats and $5 for general admission. For fans unable to attend in person, live stats and a live video webcast will be available with links found on the women's basketball schedule at CNUsports.com.
Christopher Newport enters the Saturday afternoon matinee riding a 17-match win streak dating back to the middle of the 2019-20 campaign. CNU has won four straight against Southern Virginia and owns a 19-1 advantage in the all-time series against the Knights.
The last official matchup for Christopher Newport came on March 7, 2020 when they defeated Endicott in the NCAA Second Round. After reaching the NCAA Tournament Sectional round for the fifth consecutive season, the COVID-19 pandemic put a halt on the 2020 Division III championship. The hold would last for Christopher Newport through all of 2020-21, although the team did play a shortened exhibition season last Spring.
This season, Christopher Newport will lean on it's veteran core with six seniors and three juniors headlining the Captains' roster. Senior guard
Sondra Fan was named a Preseason All-American and returns for her final campaign while fellow seniors
Jessica Foster,
Julia Hobbs,
Phylicia McInnis,
Julia Ng, and
Natalie Terwilliger are all back for head coach
Bill Broderick. In the junior class, Region Rookie of the Year
Anaya Simmons returns with classmates
Katy Rader and
Jovia Winkey.
Southern Virginia will counter with several key players from their 2019-20 squad including first team Preseason All-American Katie Garrish. The senior is joined by Savanna Christensen, Anna Singer, Sophie Wright, and Courtney McKrola as returners in the Knights rotation.
Following Saturday's opener, the Captains will return to action on Tuesday evening at 6:00 pm against Bridgewater College.
