CNU Women's Basketball Moves Up in the National Rankings Ahead of Mid-Week Matchup Against William Peace

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's basketball team moved up to No. 6 in the WBCA Division III National Rankings and vaulted to No. 13 in the D3hoops.com Top 25 ahead of a mid-week matchup at the Freeman Center on Wednesday night as the undefeated Captains take on William Peace University (2-3) at 6:00 p.m. The nationally-ranked CNU women's squad is 7-0 to start the year, running it's overall win streak to 24 straight games. 

The Captains are coming off a 77-61 win over Franklin & Marshall College on Sunday afternoon, adding to the third longest home winning streak in program history. CNU has now won 24 straight games in the Freeman Center dating back to to a six-point setback against Messiah on December 1, 2018. Overall, the Captains have the second longest active win streak in Division III and the second longest winning streak in program history. 

This week, CNU improved to 7-0 and voters in both polls took notice, moving the Captains up to No. 6/13 in the nation. Last week, the Captains were No. 7 in the WBCA poll and CNU started the year ranked No. 20 in the preseason D3hoops.com national rankings. Hope College leads both rankings as the only team with a longer active win streak with 50 consecutive victories. 

On Wednesday night, CNU will return to the friendly confines of the Freeman Center for their second of four straight home games on the schedule. Following Wednesday night's matchup, CNU will return to the court on Saturday, December 4 against Meredith College before wrapping up the homestand against Marymount on December 12. 

This season, Christopher Newport has been led by steady team defense that ranks second nationally in total steals and sixth in turnovers forced per game. A torrid start offensively has also led the Captains to rank sixth nationally in scoring offense and fifth in scoring margin, outscoring opponents by an average of over 39 points per game. Sondra Fan leads the cahrge with 13.7 points per game while shooting over 50% from the field. Anaya Simmons, with 11.9 points per game, and Natalie Terwilliger, with 10.5 points per game, are also averaging double figures. 

Peace will counter with a squad averaging 65.4 points per game through their first five. Pamela Mock is the team's leading scorer with 11.8 points per game while Kiera Williams is averaging nearly a double-double with 11.0 points and 9.2 rebounds per contest.
