LYNCHBURG, Va. - Christopher Newport University never held the lead Sunday afternoon in an 83-66 loss at the University of Lynchburg. The Captains, now 3-2, made just eight of 30 shots in the opening half as the Hornets built a 39-24 halftime lead and coasted to the 17-point victory to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Lynchburg, playing its home opener at Turner Gymnasium, scored the first five points of the game and stretched the advantage to as many as 18 in the opening half. CNU cut the lead to 11 with nine minutes to go in the second half, 60-49, but the Hornets responded with a 12-0 run to put the game away. The Captains were victimized by 16 turnovers and shot 41 percent from the field for the game (24 of 59). The Hornets converted 19 of 25 free throw attempts (76 percent) to help propel them to the wire-to-wire victory.

Ian Anderson, who scored 12 points and also tallied a team-high seven rebounds. Freshman
Ty Henderson also reached double figures with 11 points.
Lynchburg's T.C. Thacker and Cam Savage led all scorers with 20 points each, and the Hornets' Tharon Suggs also scored in double digits with a dozen points. Lynchburg made 28 of 61 shots from the field for the game (46 percent) and out-rebounded the Captains, 38-37.
The teams will meet again at the Freeman Center on Sunday, December 12th, at 4:00 p.m. Lynchburg now holds a 14-9 lead in the all-time series.
The Captains return to action on Saturday, hosting Alvernia in the CNU/Holiday Inn Invitational. Tipoff time is set for 4:00 p.m.
