Riley Cook Nets 30th Career Game-Winning Goal as No. 5 Captains Roll into NCAA Women's Soccer Second Round

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Continuing to make unprecedented history seemingly every game for the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team, fifth-year senior midfielder Riley Cook netted another milestone on Saturday afternoon with her 30th career game-winning goal. The Captains' all-time leader scored in the first minute against Cabrini University (10-6-4) and the goal proved all CNU needed in a 2-0 shutout victory in the NCAA Tournament opening round.

The Captains advanced to the NCAA Second Round for the fifth consecutive tournament and the sixth time in program history with the victory, extending an 18-game unbeaten streak from the start of the season. CNU is now 17-0-1 heading into the second round, where they will match up with Franklin & Marshall College at 3:00 p.m. on Captains Field.

Cook logged her 30th career winner and moved into a tie for the fourth most in all of NCAA play, men's or women's at any NCAA level, since the stat begun being tracked in 2010. In addition to the game-winning goal milestone, Cook's scoring strike just 51 seconds into the match stands as the fastest goal in NCAA Tournament history for the Captains.

Sarah Rhiel started the play for CNU in the opening moments as the defender rushed a ball into the box on the right side for Cook. After a fake opened up a lane from close range, Cook's second swing found the back of the net for her 18th goal of the season.

While the opening tally appeared it may open the flood gates against Cabrini, the Cavaliers rebounded and kept the Captains off the board for the remainder of the first half. CNU took 15 shots with nine on frame in the first half, but excellent team defense on the line helped keep the Captains off the board. Three different Cabrini defenders earned team saves in the first half while Ashley Tutzauer added five stops of her own.

With a 1-0 lead carrying into the second half, the Captains would add an insurance goal early in the second half. Just over five minutes into the second stanza, Christopher Newport fans were treated to an absolutely astonishing attack to increase the lead to two. Defender Nyah Savage battled for the ball on the left sideline before finding a teammate with a nice feed into the middle of the field. With space from just under 30 yards out, a missile off the foot of senior Sarah Smith whistled through the air and cruised by the diving goalkeeper into the left side of the netting.

Smith notched her eighth goal of the season while Savage picked up her fourth assist.

CNU continued to pepper the Cabrini defense with shots, and finished with 26 total in the game including 16 on target. Cook put five of her eight attempts on frame to lead the way while Smith and Ryanne Davidson each added three shots on-goal in the contest.

While the offense was clicking, the defense was suffocating. All but one of the 24 eligible players made it into the contest for head coach Jamie Gunderson's NCAA Tournament debut, and the group locked down a dominating shutout. The defense did not allow a single shot in the contest, nor did Cabrini earn a single corner kick.

Haley Eiser earned her 28th career shutout while playing all 90 minutes in goal for the Captains. She also earned her 49th career win to pull within two victories of all-time leader Carly Maglio on the all-time charts at CNU.

Christopher Newport will now focus it's attention on second round opponent, Franklin & Marshall College (14-3-3), after the Diplomats came from behind to defeat WestConn, 2-1, in the opening round. Kickoff from Captains Field is slated for 3:00 p.m. on Sunday with live stats and live video available at CNUsports.com.
