CNU Women's Basketball Game Notes
BALTIMORE, Md. -- After securing head coach
Bill Broderick's 200th career win at CNU on Tuesday night, the Christopher Newport women's basketball team will begin it's trek to the next milestone this weekend with a pair of games in the Renie Amoss Memorial Tip-Off Classic hosted by Goucher College. The 20th-ranked Captains (2-0) will first take on Gettysburg College (0-0) on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. before matching up against the host Gophers (0-2) at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.Â
Live stats and live video will be available for all four games of the tournament which also includes Hiram College in the Classic format. The first game will tip at 5:30 p.m. on Friday with Hiram and Goucher taking the floor before CNU and Gettysburg. Links to the gameday coverage can be found on the CNU Women's Basketball schedule at CNUsports.com.Â
The all-time series in both games favors the Captains in limited action. In three previous games against the Bullets, the Captains are unbeaten including a narrow 82-78 win in the opening round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament. CNU trailed by as many as 14 in the back-and-forth battle that was not decided until the final minute of play. This season, Gettysburg is picked first in the Centennial Conference after a 22-6 overall record and NCAA Tournament appearance in the 2019-20 season.Â
On Saturday, CNU will take on Goucher for the seventh time with a 4-2 advantage in the all-time series. The two teams have not faced off since the 2007-08 season when Goucher won a 81-69 head-to-head. Christopher Newport won four of five between 2000-2005 to start the series.Â
This weekend marks the inaugural Renie Amoss Memorial Tip-Off Classic, honoring a three-sport alumna who tragically lost her life in a car crash weeks after graduation in 1993. Amoss still stands as the Gophers' all-time leading scorer with 2,220 points.
Christopher Newport will carry a 2-0 record into the weekend while riding a 19-game winning streak heading into the team's first games away from home in 2021-22. As a team, the Captains are scoring 98.5 points per game while led by seniors
Natalie Terwilliger (16.0 ppg) and
Sondra Fan (15.5 ppg). Terwilliger is hitting 66.7% of her shots and leading the team in rebounding with 7.0 per game while Fan has swiped 10 steals and dished out seven assists to add a well-rounded statistical haul through the first two contests.Â
Gettysburg is led by head coach Nate Davis, who has guided the Bullets to a 109-29 record through his first six years. Opening their season against CNU, the Bullets were ranked as high as 16th in the nation during the 2019-20 campaign and led the nation in three-point percentage, making 38.1% from beyond the arc as a team. Senior All-Conference guard Carly Rice has helped lead Gettysburg to three straight NCAA Tournaments, marking the first time in program history the Bullets have accomplished that feat.Â
Goucher has opened the year 0-2 with setbacks against McDaniel and Shenandoah. The host Gophers have been led by senior guard Anise Williams, averaging 8.0 points per game while also grabbing 3.0 steals per contest. Senior guard Alayna McFadden has also added 7.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.Â
Following the weekend tournament trip, the Captains will travel to to Ashland, Va. for the Randolph-Macon Tip-Off Classic on November 19-20.Â
