Christopher Newport Set to Host St. Mary's Wednesday Night

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Coming off of a perfect 2-0 weekend, Christopher Newport returns to the Freeman Center to host St. Mary's on Wednesday night.

The Captains and Seahawks will face off at 7:00pm on Wednesday. The match will be streamed live on CNU All-Access and accompanied with live stats.

Last Time Out

The Captains have won 12 of their last 13 after taking two matches this weekend over Shenandoah and Washington & Lee. A sweep of Shenandoah saw Maddie Carter lead the team with 15 kills while Noelle Star served a career-high five aces. The win over Washington & Lee looked different, as the Captains totaled a season-best 13 blocks. Hanna Nelson led CNU with seven while Kyla McIntyre and Mackenzie Wright each contributed five blocks.

The Captains and Seahawks series dates back to 1983. CNU holds a 15-7 record in the series, and has won the last 13 in a row. The last time St. Mary's topped the Captains was 1997. CNU took down the Seahawks twice in 2019, once at home and once away, but both 3-0 sweeps.

Scouting the Seahawks

St. Mary's is 4-8 this season but picked up two wins last week over Penn State Brandywine and Trinity (DC). In the latter game, setter Nicole Gibson again played a large role in the Seahawks' success. Gibson posted a career-best five aces in the win over Trinity along with 18 assists. The sophomore has at least one ace in all but one match and double-digit assists in all but two matches.
