NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The fourth-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team ripped a season-high 36 shots and logged 17 corner kicks as the dominant offense pressed the Mary Washington defense, but the Captains were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against the Eagles on Wednesday night.
Riley Cook scored her 14th goal of the season just 21 seconds into the second half as Christopher Newport falls to 13-0-1 overall this year.
The offensive showcase included 15 total shots on goal and 12 total attempts from Cook, matching the total shot count by Mary Washington in the game. The attack worked for 17 corner kicks, which is tied for the second most in program history and the highest total in a game in almost exactly a decade (vs. N.C. Wesleyan on Oct. 28, 2011).
Overall, CNU took 36 total shots, including 10 in extra time, and forced Mary Washington goalkeeper Allison Nork to make a career-high 14 saves. Two of those saves came in the first three minutes of action as CNU forward
Sarah Smith challenged the keeper from point blank range just 36 seconds into the match. Nork made two more saves in the first seven and a half minutes including hard shots from
Sarah Rhiel and
Emily Talotta.
In the first half, CNU took 14 shots and put five on net, but the score remained tied at the intermission. Just after the second-half whistle restarted play, Cook put away one of the fastest goals to start a half in program history. Just 21 seconds into the second stanza, Jessica Zimmerman lined a hard pass into the box for Cook just inside the six-yard box. The ball rattled around her legs and her defender was caught between steps as Cook touched to her right foot and blasted a short-range laser into the back of the net.
The score was the 80th of Cook's career and pushed her over 30 points for the season. She is the first player in program history to record 30-point seasons in each of her four seasons as a Captain.
Unfortunately for the Captains, Gracie Williams would answer for the visitors just three minutes later. On a play from outside the box, Williams lifted a hard cross into the box that continued to sail over the CNU back line and goalkeeper. Her shot buried into the left pocket for just the fifth goal allowed by the Captains' defense this season.
After the equalizer, the CNU attack battled time and time again upfield looking for the go-ahead tally. In the 57th minute,
Nyah Savage got loose for a hard shot that just narrowly missed high. In the 74th minute, Rhiel got by a defender in the box and blistered a hard shot from a tough angle that squeaked past the goal. A flurry of chances in the 80th minute saw
Riley Cook and
Jill McDonald blocked on three straight attempts.
In extra time, Christopher Newport continued to add pressure to the Mary Washington defense. Twice in the last two minutes of the first overtime, Nork needed to make saves against CNU chances. First, Cook forced a diving stop and then Talotta's challenged her with a hard shot off the toe. In the second OT, Smith had one of the best shots of the day for the Captains from just inside the box; she took aim and unleashed a bullet that sailed just over the crossbar.
The Eagles back line held on for the 1-1 draw after 110 minutes of action. The result ends a 13-game win streak for the Captains to start the season, setting a new program record. While the match ends the win streak, the fourth-ranked Captains continue a 14-match unbeaten streak that ranks fourth longest in program history.
Christopher Newport will close out the regular season this Saturday, October 30 as they host the University of Lynchburg at 5:00 p.m. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available for all the action at CNUsports.com.
