Christopher Newport Travels to Face National Powers This Weekend

The Christopher Newport Captains will take on the toughest competition they've faced this season at this weekend's Randolph-Macon Invitational. After facing the hosts, they'll face top-ranked Johns-Hopkins and #12 Emory.

Match Details

The Captains play twice on Friday with an opening match against Randolph-Macon at 3:00pm followed by #12 Emory. They'll face #1 Johns Hopkins on Saturday at 12:30pm. The match with the hosting Yellow Jackets will have live stats.

Last Time Out

Christoper Newport is in the midst of a challenging stretch coming off of last week's road trip. In addition to the two ranked teams on the schedule this weekend, the Captains faced #11 Juniata as well as a talented Ithaca squad. CNU didn't pick up a win in either of those matches, but they'll be well rested coming into the weekend since they didn't play a midweek matchup. Maddie Carter led the Captains against Juniata with eight kills while Kyla McIntyre added six on 16 swings for a team-best .188 percentage. On Saturday, Macy Burk matched her season high with six blocks and Carter added 15 kills for the fifth time in the last eight matches as Christopher Newport dropped two straight for the first time this season.

Series History

Christopher Newport is 18-9 all-time against Randolph-Macon, which includes a loss earlier this season. The Captains fell 2-3 at home back on September 30th. CNU is 2-15 against Emory and 2-2 against Johns Hopkins in the program's history. They last saw Emory in 2019, but haven't faced Hopkins since 2016.

Scouting the Yellow Jackets

Randolph-Macon's win over CNU back at the end of September was their fourth in a row and became part of a 10-match win streak for the Yellow Jackets. Following their most recent loss to Washington & Lee, the RMC has a 14-5 record and enters the weekend having won 10 of their last 11. Sydney Koch has been the most consistent attacker ranking in the top 30 nationally with a .377 hitting percentage.

Scouting the Blue Jays

Johns Hopkins was perfect in 2019 on their way to an undefeated national championship. The Blue Jays have won 58 in a row, including 23 this season. What's more, they've only played a fifth set once this season. Setter Natalie Aston has played an integral part in Hopkins' success. She leads the team in assists, blocks, and service aces and is third in digs.

Scouting the Eagles

A perennial volleyball power, Emory is 17-3 on the year and have won 11 of their last 12. They enter this weekend after sweeping both of their matches last weekend in UAA round robin. Tara Martin leads the Eagles with 214 kills, averaging nearly three per set/
