Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 4 CNU Women's Soccer Remains Undefeated With 3-0 Win at Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team kept it's pristine record clean on Saturday with a 3-0 victory at the University of Mary Washington (4-6-1). Playing just ahead of the rainstorms that soaked the Fredericksburg, Va. area, the Captains scored one in the first and two in the second half to pull away for the shutout win.

The dominant CNU offense scored three goals for the fifth consecutive game and earned multiple tallies for the ninth time this year. It matches the longest stretch of games with three or more goals scored since the 2006 season when the Captains posted seven straight high-scoring wins from October 15-November 3.

In the victory, the Captains improved to 11-0-0 with eight shutouts and a 0.27 goals-against average. Three different CNU players registered goals in the contest including the first game-winning goal of the season for junior forward Molly Beegle

Beegle's winner would come in the 38th minute of play when she made a pinpoint accurate shot from inside the box. Riley Cook entered a pass into the middle of the box for Beegle, who spun on her first touch, turning on a defender and moving to her right. After sliding past another Mary Washington back, she slipped a right-footed shot into the narrowest window on the near post for the score.

It was the Norfolk, Va. native's fourth goal of the season and held up as her first winner. In two seasons on the field with the Captains, Beegle now has nine goals and three assists with a pair of game-winning strikes.

The 1-0 lead would hold until halftime after Christopher Newport held an 8-2 advantage in total shots. The Captains put three shots on goal before the break while senior goalkeeper Haley Eiser needed to make just one save for CNU.

Just a couple of minutes into the second half, Jessica Zimmerman got behind the defense on the right side. She played a short pass back to Sarah Smith, who split a pair of defenders ahead to Cook for a quick shot. The right-footed rip zoomed past the Eagles keeper into the left side of the goal for her 10th goal of the season. The tally gave the Captains' breathing room, extending the lead to 2-0 after the nice combination of passes up front.

Cook scored her tenth goal of the season and in doing so, became the first player in program history to score at least 10 goals in all four seasons of her career.

Rounding out the scoring in the match with less than ten minutes to go, senior Ryanne Davidson picked up her fourth goal of the season. Taking the ball off a throw-in with a defender behind her, Davidson turned toward the top of the box before positioning for a left-footed shot. The senior forward scored on a laser that snuck inside the near post to put the Captains ahead, 3-0.

The back four played all 90 minutes for the Captains in another dominant defensive effort. Jill McDonald, Hannah Karas, Sarah Rhiel, and Nyah Savage locked down the Mary Washington attack and allowed just six total shots in the game. The Eagles put only four on frame and Eiser stopped all four.

In total, the Captains outshot the home team, 17-6, en route to the team's eighth shutout of the season. The clean sheet was the 25th of Eiser's career, becoming just the second goalkeeper in program history to reach the milestone.

Christopher Newport will return home to face Salisbury University on Wednesday, October 20 at 7:00 pm. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available from Captains Field with all the action.
