Captains and Montclair State Both Looking for First NJAC Victory in Saturday Afternoon Battle

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University looks to snap a two-game losing skid Saturday, hosting Montclair State University in New Jersey Athletic Conference play. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Kelchner Field at TowneBank Stadium. The Captains and the Red Hawks will both be looking for their first conference victories of the season. Art Link's squad is 2-4 overall, while Montclair State is 1-5, and both teams have dropped their first two league contests.

The Captains are coming off a 48-28 loss at William Paterson last Saturday, while MSU fell at home to the College of New Jersey, 14-9. Saturday's contest will be the sixth in the all-time series, and the Red Hawks hold a 3-2 edge in the previous meetings. The squads last met on October 19, 2019, when MSU recorded a 24-0 triumph in Montclair, N.J.

"Montclair State is a much better football team than their record indicates, and we feel we are too," Link said. "This is a tough league year in and year out, and every week is a tough test. We're still working hard and our effort has been strong, now we need to go out and accomplish our goals."

Christopher Newport sophomore quarterback Matt Dzierski threw three touchdown passes last week and also ran for a score in the loss at William Paterson. Dzierski's 343 yards passing was the fourth-highest single game total in CNU program history. The Lorton, Va., native has now thrown nine scoring passes this year with just three interceptions in six games. He has also run for five scores this year, and is averaging 239.5 yards passing and 33.7 yards rushing per game.

Fifth-year senior wide receiver Garrison Mayo has also sparked the CNU offense, pulling in a 64-yard scoring pass last week. Mayo has now caught 37 passes in five games played this fall for 485 yards and three scores. Mayo is averaging 97 yards per game receiving, and has scored 11 career touchdowns for the Captains.

The Red Hawks are coached by Rick Giancola, the dean of NJAC coaches, who is in his 39th season leading the Hawks. MSU has struggled offensively this season, averaging just 15 points per game during its 1-5 start.

Gates will open at 12 noon on Saturday, and tickets will be on sale prior to kickoff. The game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 12:30 p.m.
