Christopher Newport Travels to Lexington for Two Weekend Matches

The Christopher Newport Captains will head west for the weekend, making the trip over to Lexington, Virginia, specifically Washington & Lee, for a pair of matches on Saturday.

Match Details

The Captains will play for back-to-back matches on Saturday. They'll take on Shenandoah at 2:30pm and square off with the hosts Washington & Lee 5:00pm. The match with the hosting Generals will be available on Washington & Lee All-Access. Both matches will have live stats.

Last Time Out

Christopher Newport's ten-match winning streak came to an end on Thursday night after a 3-2 loss to Randolph-Macon. The two sides were very evenly matched on the score sheet and it showed on the scoreboard. After splitting the first four sets (2-2), the Captains and Yellow Jackets found themselves knotted up at 15-15 in the fifth set, with Randolph-Macon narrowly slipping away and scoring the final two points. The Captains posted their second-highest kill total this season with 61, including nine in a career-best effort for Sammy Carroll.

By The Numbers

169
The Captains' serves have been tough to handle so far this season, particularly as of late. With double-digit aces in four of their last five matches, they've totaled 169 service aces so far this season, tied for the fourth-most in the country. Anna Dean has played a large role in that total as she herself ranks second in the nation with 47 aces this season.

Series History

Christopher Newport will face two familiar foes this weekend in Lexington. The Captains have matched up with Shenandoah 47 times since their first meeting in 1990. CNU hasn't lost to Shenandoah since 1998, winning the last 32 in a row and holding a 38-9 advantage in the series. Saturday also marks the 32nd meeting of CNU and Washington & Lee. The Captains lead the series 18-14 and have won the last 5 in a row.

Scouting the Hornets

Shenandoah enters their Friday night contest with Bridgewater at 4-9 and having dropped five of their last six. They'll host their homecoming match on Friday night before traveling to Lexington on Saturday. Jullian Warter is the biggest attacking threat for the Hornets with 187 kills, more than double the next highest total. The sophomore also leads the team in digs and has had six matches this season with double-digit kills and digs.

Scouting the Generals

Washington & Lee is 13-3 on the season and are winners of seven of their last eight. They'll face Shenandoah before CNU on Saturday, getting a break between matches as the hosts. Sydney Heifner has been a consistent threat on their attack, averaging nearly four kills-per-set this season.
