NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 18th-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will face a nationally-ranked test on Saturday at 1 p.m. when the Captains host No. 16 Stevenson in a non-conference battle at Jennings Family Stadium.
Christopher Newport enters the weekend with a 4-1 record, including a 2-0 ledger at home. Meanwhile, Stevenson is 1-2 with a 1-1 mark on the road.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats will be available at CNUsports.com. The Captains will also provide a broadcast of the action with Andy McGregor and Jake Myers calling all of the action. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Christopher Newport is coming off of a 19-7 triumph over Eastern on Wednesday. During the game,
Dylan Rice made his first appearance since February 19 and quickly deposited six goals. That total established a new career-high for the junior All-American and equaled the second-highest single-game mark in program history.
Along with Rice, nine other Captains recorded at least one tally, including multi-goal efforts by
Alex Brendes,
Drew Miller,
Brady Altobello, and
Matt Rice. With his showcase, Brendes became just the second player in program history to begin his career with at least two goals in each of his first five collegiate appearances. Only
Dylan Rice previously accomplished that feat after opening the 2018 season with five straight multi-goal outings.
Meanwhile, on the defensive side,
Phoenix Hines registered four takeaways against Eastern while inching closer to history. The junior now has 97 caused turnovers in his career, which places him just five shy of matching
Drew Cornell's all-time program record of 102.
Max Wayne also recorded his 90th caused turnover on Wednesday, placing him alongside Hines, Cornell, and Teddy Pekalski as the only Captains to reach that milestone.
Aided by the efforts of Hines, Wayne, and the other defensive standouts, Christopher Newport currently ranks 20th in the NCAA with an average of 14.80 takeaways per game. The squad is also 17th with 172 ground balls.
Campbell Pozin has been especially effective lately, collecting at least two ground balls in each of his last four appearances, including a season-high four at Roanoke on February 19.
On the other side of the field, Stevenson has faced one of the nation's toughest schedules so far this season with a victory over No. 6 York (Pa.) and setbacks against No. 12 Gettysburg and No. 15 Ursinus. The Mustangs are a perennial national power with 11 consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament, including a run to the third round of last year's playoffs.
This season, Stevenson has been led by Jacob Tatum, who has 11 points, including four-goal efforts against both York (Pa.) and Gettysburg. Meanwhile, Ethan Christensen has five goals and five assists. Between the pipes, senior Marc Poust has compiled a .460 save percentage and an 11.33 goals-against-average. He came through with 12 stops in the squad's triumph at No. 6 York (Pa.) on February 22.
Saturday's match-up will mark only the third all-time meeting between the two programs. Stevenson has won the previous two bouts, including a 14-8 triumph last year. During that game, Rice had five points, including three goals, for the Captains, while Poust notched nine saves to earn the victory for the Mustangs.
After this weekend's contest, Christopher Newport will return to action when the program makes its first-ever appearance at the Mustang Classic in Owings Mills, Maryland. The Captains will open the two-day tournament on Friday with a 1:45 p.m. tilt against No. 17 Lynchburg.
