NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Six Captains came through with at least two points, while three players registered hat-tricks as the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team showcased a well-balanced attack while rolling past Coast Guard, 16-12, during a non-conference showdown on a drizzly Tuesday afternoon at Jennings Family Stadium.
Against the Bears,
Zoe Dyer led the Captains with seven points, including five goals. Equally impressive,
Kelsey Winters registered six points, including three assists. Her final helper of the day marked her 23rd of the year, moving her past Dyer for third on the program's all-time single-season freshman list.
Rounding out the high-volume scorers,
Hope Hunter ripped four goals against Coast Guard. That marked her third multi-goal effort of the season and her second in the past four days.
Meanwhile,
Sam Wettengel was electric on the draw throughout Tuesday's contest. The senior standout posted a career-high nine draw controls. Along with establishing a new personal benchmark, that total also equaled the 10th-highest single-game mark in program history.
In addition to her work on the draw, Wettengel also registered the 54th caused turnover of her career. That moved her into sole possession of 10th place on the program's all-time charts.
With the victory, Christopher Newport now stands at 3-4 on the season. The setback drops Coast Guard to 3-2.
After two straight battles with nationally-ranked opponents, the Captains quickly found their groove against the Bears. Hunter kicked things off after landing a bouncer on a free-position attempt. Moments later, Dyer erupted for an impressive streak.
First, the sophomore set up a goal after drawing the attention of a pair of defenders before shoveling a ball to Winters along the left post. Later, she landed three straight daggers of her own, including a dominant run that saw her bully through a slew of defenders on the far side of the field before stinging a blast from the interior.
Capping off the early-game surge,
Gracie Sanders joined the fun after circling the crease before depositing from the right side for the squad's sixth strike in just the ninth minute of action.
Although the Bears broke through for their first tally, Christopher Newport quickly shot back. Dyer once again was at the forefront of the response as she found Hunter cutting through the zone for her second assist before backing in and whipping a dagger for her fourth rocket of the contest.
Staring at an 8-1 deficit, the visitors chipped away over the final 12 minutes of the opening period. Despite a pair of takeaways by
Julia Iapicca and a masterful stop by
Becca Creekmore on a free-position attempt, the Bears strung together three straight goals to pull within four at halftime.
Following the break, Coast Guard inched closer after scoring two of the first three goals in the second stanza, but Winters quickly stole back the momentum. First, she capitalized on crisp passing by Iapicca and Sanders before ducking under a defender on the inside for her second goal of the contest. Less than four minutes later, she came back again and completed her hat-trick after burning the goalie during a one-on-one situation, which gave the hosts an 11-6 edge.
After the Bears added their seventh tally, Christopher Newport quickly answered on both sides of the ball. First, on the offensive end, Winters found
Alexis Kasuda on the doorstep following a free-position attempt before connecting with
Kendall Krause on the run during an extra-man situation.
Capping off a three-goal spurt, Hunter added her second eight-meter missile of the contest to snatch a 14-7 edge.
Meanwhile, on the other side, the Captains clamped down.
Riley Rafterry-Lee won a key race for a loose ball after Creekmore deflected a blast during a nice defensive stand. Minutes later,
Jackie Baker brought the hammer down on an attacker who bullied her way towards the crease before Rafterry-Lee pounced on another roller to end the threat.
Capitalizing on the other end, Christopher Newport flashed its speed on a breakaway as Krause fed up the field to Sanders, who took advantage of an unsettled situation for the team's 15th goal. Shortly thereafter, Baker spun and flipped a pinpoint pass inside to Hunter, who polished off the scoring with five minutes remaining to help seal the 16-12 triumph.
Overall, Krause had a tremendous day as the sophomore wrapped up the afternoon with two points, three draw controls, two ground balls, and three takeaways. Iapicca and
Joely Stevens also caused two turnovers apiece, while Creekmore added five ground balls and four saves to pick up the victory.
During the game, Christopher Newport held a 30-23 advantage in shots and a 17-10 lead in ground balls. Meanwhile, the two squads split the game's 30Â draws.
The Captains will return to action on Saturday when the squad hosts Haverford at noon.
