NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport puts its winning streaks on the line again on Saturday as the Captains head north for an important Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader. The men and women will play the Spartans of York College at Wolf Gymnasium in York, with the women's game tipping off at 2:00 p.m. followed by the men's game at 4:00 p.m. Both Christopher Newport teams can clinch the regular season CAC title with a win over York, and a victory would also mean a top seed in the conference's post-season tournaments later this month.
The men are currently riding an 11-game winning streak and have an overall record of 18-4 and 7-0 in the CAC. York is 17-5 and 6-1, with its only loss in league play coming at the Freeman Center on January 10th. A victory by the Captains would open a two-game lead with just two games remaining, and Christopher Newport would clinch by virtue of the two victories over the Spartans in head-to-head play.
John Krikorian's squad is coming off another dominating performance Wednesday night, a 93-63 triumph at St. Mary's (Md.). Six Captains scored in double figures led by senior Dalon McHugh's 18 points. Senior Cutch Ellis and freshman Ian Anderson recorded double-doubles with ten points and ten rebounds each. The Captains have not lost since December 15th at Virginia Wesleyan, and have out-scored their opponents during the 11-game winning streak by an average of 22 points per game. Junior Jason Aigner needs just 18 points to become the 33rd player in men's basketball history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Aigner scored a dozen on Wednesday at St. Mary's, and now has 982 for his career.
The Spartans of York are led by senior Jared Wagner, who has been honored as the CAC's Player of the Week five times already this season. Wagner is averaging 17.3 points, 7.5 assists, and 5.9 rebounds per game. York has won seven straight games since losing to the Captains, 79-68, on January 10th in the first meeting. The Spartans are a high-scoring squad, and average 81 points per game. They are 9-1 at Wolf Gymnasium this season, with their only home defeat coming on January 4th to Albertus Magnus, 76-73, in the first round of a tournament hosted by the Spartans.
On the women's side, Christopher Newport has been off for a week since winning at home last Saturday over Mary Washington, 72-52.
Bill Broderick's squad has won nine straight games, and the Captains have an overall mark of 17-4 and a CAC record of 6-0. The Captains defense has been stellar all season, and the squad is holding its opponents to just 62 points per game and averages 17 steals per outing. York enters play Saturday with a 14-8 overall mark and a CAC record of 5-2, and a Christopher Newport victory would give the Captains the conference crown thanks to a three-game advantage in the standings.
Sophomore
Sondra Fan enjoyed a big week last week and was named the Capital Athletic Conference Women's Player of the Week for the first time in her career. Fan helped lead the Captains to a road win at St. Mary's (Md.) and the home victory over Mary Washington. Fan averaged 18.0 points per game and registered a 25-point effort against Mary Washington to highlight her week. She scored her 25 points on 10 field goals, including a pair of three-pointers, while serving a pivotal role in the Captains' comeback after a slow start. When Christopher Newport fell behind by nine after the first quarter, Fan scored nine points and dished a pair of assists in an 18-8 roll to end the second quarter as the Captains took the lead for good.
The Captains won the first meeting of the teams on January 10th at the Freeman Center by a 14-point margin, 64-50. Sophomore
Natalie Terwilliger led the way with a double-double, scoring 13 points and pulling down ten rebounds. York has a balanced scoring attack with four players averaging ten points or more per game. Sophomore Alana Bortner tops the squad at 12.1 points per game.
Both games will be streamed live on CNUsports.com/watch with live stats also available. The men's action will also be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning 20 minutes prior to tipoff.
