CARY, N.C. - Day two of the Grand Slam Triangle Classic saw Christopher Newport post two more softball victories Saturday as the second-ranked Captains defeated Emory, 5-3, and Randolph, 2-1. The wins followed two Captains triumphs on Friday to open the three-day, six-game tourney.
Senior starting pitcher
Trish Webb tossed a no-hitter in the win over Randolph, allowing just an unearned run. Christopher Newport has already recorded two no-hitters this season, as fellow senior
Aubrey Bates opened the 2020 campaign with a no-hitter vs. Roanoke.
The Captains, now 8-0 to start the season, opened the day Saturday by beating Emory University behind Bates, who improved her record to 3-0 on the season with the victory. Bates allowed just three hits and struck out 11 and went the distance against the Eagles, retiring the last 16 batters.
Christopher Newport scored all five of its runs on three home runs and jumped to an early 2-0 lead, then fell behind, 3-2, before scoring two in the third inning and another in the fifth to record the 5-3 victory. Junior
Patty Maye Ohanian crushed a first inning blast to start the home run string, a two-run shot. Sophomore
Bailey Roberts smacked a two-run homer as well in the third frame to put Christopher Newport ahead, 4-3, and sophomore
Sarah Proctor added an insurance run in the sixth with a solo shot. Emory dropped to 1-3 with the loss.
Webb then took over as the Captains took on Randolph College, and the senior starter was dominant, facing only 24 batters and giving up just one walk while striking out five. Webb allowed just an unearned run in the third inning that tied the game at 1-1, and also upped her record to 3-0 to start the season.Â
The Captains managed only four hits against the Wildcats, but again utilized the long ball as sophomore
Bailey Roberts cracked her second home run of the day, a solo shot in the second inning. After Randolph scored in the third to tie it up, Christopher Newport got the game-winning run across the plate in the fifth as sophomore
Sarah Proctor singled home senior
Grace Wild, who had doubled, to provide the 2-1 final verdict. Randolph fell to 3-3 with the loss.Â
The Grand Slam Triangle Classic wraps up on Sunday, and the Captains will see action with two more games. The first, scheduled for a 9:30 a.m. start, will be against the Profs of Rowan (1-1), and then at 12:30
