Captains Host York Saturday in Capital Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Championship

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - For the third straight season, Christopher Newport and York College (Pa.) will face each other in the Capital Athletic Conference Championship game. The schools have split the last two title meetings, and Saturday at the Freeman Center the teams will go head-to-head once again in a 2:00 p.m. start. Both squads are 21-5 overall and both went 9-1 in the CAC this year. A coin flip gave the Captains the top seed and the right to host the title game for the third straight year.

The Captains advanced to the final with a dominant performance Wednesday night in a 100-63 victory over St. Mary's in the semifinals. Christopher Newport never trailed and led by as many as 57 in the second half of the one-sided affair. First team All-Conference junior Jason Aigner led the way with 26 points, and is now just seven three-pointers shy of matching a school career record for threes. Aigner was one of five Captains in double figures as Christopher Newport hit the 100-point mark for the first time this season.

York reached the final by using a big second half to oust Mary Washington, 74-60, Wednesday night in York, Pa. The game was tied at the half, 30-30, before the Spartans pulled away in the second stanza. York's lineup features the Player of the Year in the CAC, senior Jared Wagner, who averages 18 points, seven assists, and six rebounds per game. The Spartans have won 11 straight games since beating the Captains.

The teams split their two games during the regular season, with both teams winning on their home floor. The Captains used an 18-point performance from senior Dalon McHugh II in the first meeting to post a 79-68 win at the Freeman Center on January 10th. The Spartans edged the Captains in York in double overtime on February 8th, 101-97. Senior Luther Gibbs led the way for the Captains with 18 points.

Two years ago, York defeated Christopher Newport in the Championship game, 82-73, at the Freeman Center. Last season, the Captains registered a 78-56 victory in the CAC final. In all, the schools have met 18 times, with the Captains holding a 13-5 edge in the series.

The victor on Saturday will receive an automatic bid to the upcoming NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship. The bracket for the tourney will be released Monday afternoon at 12:30 p.m.

Saturday's action will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 1:40 p.m. The game will also be streamed live on CNUsports.com/watch with live stats also available.
