NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Putting on a show for the ages,
Zoe Dyer and
Kelsey Winters teamed up on a lethal offensive outburst as the two Captains helped carry the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team past Roanoke, 15-10, during the squad's home opener on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Jennings Family Stadium.
During the battle, Dyer deposited a career-high eight goals, which tied the third-highest single-game total in program history. That effort marked the most by a Captain since Christopher Newport Hall of Famer Ashton Marshall also had eight strikes against Mary Washington on April 2, 2014.
While Dyer was lighting up the back of the net, Winters was facilitating the attack while registering seven assists. That also equaled the third-highest total by a Captain, matching the performance by current teammate
Cat Leighty against Roanoke on March 5, 2019. Winters' seven helpers also established a new freshman standard, topping the mark of five set by Erin Callahan against Redlands on March 5, 2014.
Along with history-makers,
Kendall Krause and
Katie Orrison also chipped in with two strikes apiece, while Leighty had a goal and an assist.
Sam Wettengel also stuffed the stat sheet with four draw controls, three caused turnovers, two ground balls, and a key second-half goal.
With the victory, Christopher Newport improves to 1-1 on the season, while the setback drops Roanoke to 0-1.
Flashing their firepower from the start, the Captains scooted out to a 5-0 lead less than 10 minutes into regulation. Fittingly, Dyer and Winters led the early onslaught. Dyer landed three of the early blows, including the opener just over 30 seconds into the contest following a nice wraparound attempt along the left post. Meanwhile, Winters set up three tallies, including one by Orrison, while Krause also struck paydirt to round out the quick surge.
Shaking off the early stumble, Roanoke responded with three consecutive free-position tallies before the hosts added a three-goal spurt of their own.
Alexis Kasuda stole back some momentum after capitalizing on a feed from Winters before Dyer and Leighty added rapid-fire rockets to regain a five-goal edge at 8-3.
Refusing to back down, the Maroons clawed back into the game with a clutch rally at the end of the first half. Although Dyer capped off her opening period with her fifth dart, the visitors landed four of the final five goals to cut Christopher Newport's deficit down to two entering halftime.
After the break, the Captains regrouped. Refusing to change what was working, Winters continued to pick apart the RC defense. The freshman set up a quick dagger by Orrison before helping out on Dyer's sixth goal to snatch an 11-7 lead.
Although Roanoke managed to regain its footing for a brief period with a pair of goals, Christopher Newport refused to give up its lead. Keeping the visitors in check, Wettengel came out of a timeout in the 45th minute and hammered home a strike before Dyer ripped her seventh after beating three defenders on the far side of the field.
Holding a 13-9 lead with 12 minutes to go, the Captains never relented. Krause punctuated her afternoon with her second tally before Dyer added the final blow. With less than five minutes left, Dyer found herself rolling through the zone with a defender on her hip. Continuing to carry the Maroon, she eventually found a little breathing room before landing a bouncer into the back of the net.Â
Overall, Roanoke actually out-shot Christopher Newport, 31-29, but the Captains led the way in nearly every other statistical category. The hosts held an advantage in ground balls (20-13) and draw controls (14-13) while posting a stellar .905 clearing percentage.
Along with Wettengel, Dyer and
Gracie Sanders also had four draw controls, while Krause and
Becca Creekmore paced the team with five ground balls apiece. Creekmore also contributed eight saves while picking up her first collegiate victory, and both Krause and
Hannah Curry helped out on the defensive end with two caused turnovers apiece.
Christopher Newport will return to action on February 26 when the squad travels to Virginia Wesleyan for a 7 p.m. contest.
