NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
The 20th-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will open up its home slate on Saturday at 6 p.m. when the Captains christen Jennings Family Stadium with a non-conference bout against Hampden-Sydney.

Entering the weekend, both squads boast pristine 2-0 records.

For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats will be available at CNUsports.com. The Captains will also provide a broadcast of the action with Andy McGregor and Jake Myers on the call. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

Christopher Newport put an impressive punctuation mark on its early-season road swing with a 24-12 victory at Roanoke on Wednesday. Aaron Casteel helped dominate the Maroons with an incredible effort on faceoffs. The freshman won 21 of his 28 battles, which equaled the third-most victories in a single game in program history. Only All-American Tony Cruz eclipsed that mark, topping it twice during his decorated tenure.

Fellow freshman Alex Brendes also continued his torrid pace with five goals against the Maroons. Coupled with his three-goal outburst against Washington (Md.) in the opener, he is the first player in program history to open his career with back-to-back hat-tricks. Overall, he is tied with Drew Miller for the team-lead with nine points this season, while Dylan Rice and Will Stockhausen have five strikes apiece.

Defensively, Max Wayne leads the squad with six caused turnovers. With that total, he moved past former legend Brandon Moloney for third on the program's career list with 86. Phoenix Hines also has three takeaways this season and is now tied with Moloney for fourth on the all-time charts with 85 caused turnovers.

Joining the defensive juggernauts, Scott McAneney is also inching closer to history as the senior goalie sits just two saves shy of becoming the third Captain to register 400 career stops.

Hampden-Sydney, who was slotted third in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, has kicked off the 2020 campaign with back-to-back victories. In their last outing on Wednesday, the Tigers upended Catholic, 11-9, after overcoming an 8-5 deficit in the third quarter. Jared Medwar led the squad with five points, including the game-tying strike in the fourth stanza.

Medwar, a reigning second-team All-Conference honoree, currently leads HSC with 12 points. Meanwhile, Reilly French sits second in the ODAC with seven assists. Among other 2019 All-League selections, Jake Brummett leads the league with 34 faceoff victories while boasting a .618 winning percentage, and Nick Arcuri has a .592 save percentage and a 10.87 goals-against-average.

In 13 previous meetings between the two programs, Hampden-Sydney holds a 7-6 edge. Last year, Christopher Newport upended the Tigers, 12-9, behind a five-point showcase by Brady Altobello.

After this weekend's battle, the Captains will return to action on February 29 for a 1 p.m. showdown at No. 12 Ursinus.
