NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Opening up the spring schedule indoors on a chilly Saturday evening at the James River Country Club, the 40th-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team shut out NCAA Division II Chowan University (0-1) by a score of 9-0.
The Captains raced out to a 3-0 lead after doubles and won all five singles matches played to pick up the season-opening victory. Three Captains won matches in both singles and doubles play as senior
Andy Mason, sophomore
Ryan Macy, and newcomer
Scotty Hunter each went 2-0 on the day.Â
In doubles, Macy and Mason paired up for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles where they disposed of Dragan Omcikus and Timofey Tokmakov of the Hawks. In the No. 2 bout, Hunter and
Matthew Dubuque paired up for an 8-6 win over Santino Jose Sormani and Francisco Salvatori. The No. 3 match was won by the Captains by default.Â
In singles action, Mason earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Salvatori at the No. 4 slot to cap his strong performance on the day. Rookie
Dawson Driscoll also earned a straight set win at No. 5 without giving up a game to Job Williamson, 6-0, 6-0.Â
The top three lines saw
Dominic Lacombe defeat Sormani in three sets (7-5, 5-7, 10-6) while Hunter and Macy each captured wins over Omcikus and Tokmakov, respectively. Hunter won 7-5, 6-4 and Macy capped the day with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3.Â
The Captains will be back in action on Friday, February 21 at 5:00 pm as they host N.C. Wesleyan College.Â
