NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Earning the team's first dual victory of the 2019-20 season, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team shut out Millsaps College (0-2) on Saturday afternoon, 9-0. The 30th-ranked Captains improved to 1-3 overall this season after sweeping Millsaps in both singles and doubles.
First, the Christopher Newport women's team raced out to a 3-0 start with wins at all three doubles lines.
Johanna Ranta-aho and
Olivia Reed captured an 8-2 win over Grace Gaskins and Morris Kelly Clayton in No. 1 doubles, followed by an 8-3 win and an 8-4 win at No. 2 and 3, respectively.
Reagan Delp and
Kara Ferner combined for the win at No. 2 and
Ana Clara Borga paired with
Amanda Yermal for the win at No. 3.
Moving into singles play, Ranta-aho capped a perfect 2-0 performance at No. 1 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Gaskins, while Reed, Delp, and Yermal each also went 2-0 in the match. Reed played at No. 2 singles, downing Maggie Dabadie (6-2, 6-2); Delp powered past Camille Fremaux at No. 3 (6-2, 6-3); and Yermal posted a flawless win at No. 6 over Clayton (6-0, 6-0).
Rounding out the shutout victory for Christopher Newport were singles wins from junior
Kara Ferner at No. 4 (4-6, 7-6, 10-5) and
Kendra Womack at No. 6 (6-4, 6-2). Ferner defeated Marissa Brown and Womack dispatched of Jillian Sandoz. In the match at No. 4, Ferner was down 4-6, 0-5 before roaring back. She saved five match points en route to her impressive come-from-behind victory.
The Captains will return to action on Saturday, February 22 in a neutral site matchup against NYU played at Swarthmore College. Christopher Newport will then also face the host Garnet on Sunday, February 23.
