CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- The Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will kick off its 2020 campaign on Saturday at 1 p.m. when the Captains travel to Washington (Md.) for a non-conference battle at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.
The Captains, who were slotted third in the Capital Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, are coming off of a 2019 season that saw the squad register a 12-7 overall record. Meanwhile, Washington (Md.) posted a 7-9 ledger last year and was picked sixth in the Centennial Conference Preseason Rankings.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at WashingtonCollegeSports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Christopher Newport welcomes back seven players who started at least half of the games last season, including preseason All-Americans
Dylan Rice,
Scott McAneney, and
Max Wayne. Additionally,
Brady Altobello and
Will Stockhausen also return after joining the three national honorees on the Capital Athletic Conference All-League Squad in 2019.
Overall, the Captains return seven of their eight leading scorers from last season and a large collection of defensive stalwarts who helped Christopher Newport rank first in the NCAA with 324 caused turnovers. Among the defenders returning,
Phoenix Hines established a school record with 57 takeaways last season, and Wayne added 51 of his own.
Among the milestones fast approaching for the team, Hines is just three caused turnovers away from tying legendary Captain Brandon Moloney for third on the program's career list with 85. Meanwhile, between the pipes, McAneney is 18 saves shy of becoming the third player in school history to record 400 career stops.
On the other side of the field, Washington (Md.) graduated 11 seniors from last year's team but still returns a healthy group of veteran standouts. In goal, junior Chris Del Rosario led the Centennial Conference with a .577 save percentage while totaling 241 total stops. Helping out on the defensive side, Kyle Gittelman led the Shoremen with 18 caused turnovers last season during a standout freshman campaign.
Offensively, Cody Pascale has proven to be a lethal contributor on the man-up unit after leading the league with 11 strikes during extra-man situations in 2019. He eventually finished the season with 25 total goals during his junior season. Meanwhile, Cooper Sloan led the squad with 28 assists and ranked second with 30 goals.
Saturday's match-up will mark only the second meeting between the Captains and Shoremen, but their lone showdown was one of the more memorable battles during the 2019 season. Last year, the two squads engaged in a triple-overtime thriller, which marked the longest game in Christopher Newport history. Eventually, Rice capped off the festivities with a game-winning dagger in the 72nd minute to lock up the 11-10 triumph.
Rice eventually finished that contest with a hat-trick, while Altobello added four points for the hosts. On the other side, Sloan had four points for the Shoremen, and Sean Reilly netted three goals as well.
Following Saturday's tilt, Christopher Newport will return to action on February 19 for a 4 p.m. showdown at Roanoke in Salem, Virginia.
