Christopher Newport Baseball Welcomes Piedmont & Roanoke for Non-Conference Action This Weekend

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport baseball team will welcome in Piedmont College (0-1) and Roanoke College (2-1) for the first home games of 2020 at Captains Park. The home opener will pit the Captains (1-1) against Piedmont at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 14 before the three teams hit the diamond on Saturday for a pair and Roanoke one more on Sunday.

After Friday's opener for Christopher Newport, the home field for the Captains will host a neutral site contest between Piedmont and Roanoke on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. before the Captains take on Roanoke at 1:00 p.m. Then, on Sunday, the Lions and Maroons will match up again to close out the weekend.

All four games, including both featuring the 32nd-ranked Christopher Newport squad, will be streamed live on the web at CNUsports.com/watch. Live stats will also be available for all four games at cnusports.com/sidearmstats/baseball. Admission to all regular season baseball games is free of charge.

Christopher Newport will be kicking off an eight-game home stand that includes four games in six days between Friday and next Wednesday. The Captains opened their non-conference slate last weekend at Ferrum College, splitting a two-game series against the Panthers to enter this weekend with a 1-1 overall record.

Offensively, rookie Alec Reilly had the best opening weekend with a grand slam, 6 RBI, and an on-base percentage of .700 in 10 plate appearances. The freshman was 2-for-5 with 5 walks and 3 runs scored in the opening weekend. Fellow freshman Jonathan Fisher also had two hits and three walks for an OBP of .556 in two starts last weekend while scoring twice. Veterans Conner Clark and Trey Hicks each picked up a pair of hits in the first weekend with one RBI apiece.

On the mound, Christopher Newport started Josh Husby (0-1) and Dylan Weber (0-0) against Ferrum. Weber struck out five in 4.2 innings of work against the Panthers to lead the overall performance while senior Brian Owens also had a strong showing out of the bullpen with 1.2 innings and four strikeouts.

Piedmont managed to get just one game in during their opening weekend due to winter weather, suffering a 6-5 loss to Birmingham Southern in their opener. Jonathen Burkett went 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored and Harrison Trawick added a three-hit day to lead the way for the Lions.

Roanoke opened the season with a three-game series against LaGrange, winning two of three against the Panthers. The Maroons won game one, 9-6, and game two, 4-3, before giving up game three, 6-2. Junior infielder Cale Agee ripped six singles in the series with 2 RBI and 4 runs scored while hitting .500. Sophomore Hunter Andrews also had six hits and is hitting a team-best .545 with 4 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Following the four-game weekend, the Captains will host Hampden-Sydney College on Tuesday, February 18 at 2:00 p.m.
