NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After falling behind 18-9 in the first quarter of action, the Christopher Newport women's basketball team turned to sophomores
Sondra Fan and
Julia Ng as they outscored Mary Washington 63-34 the rest of the game and ran away with a Capital Athletic Conference victory at home, 72-52. Ng scored a career-high 16 points in her second double-double of the season while Fan registered her second 25-point performance of the year as the Captains improved to 17-4 overall and 6-0 in conference play.
In the win, Christopher Newport held Mary Washington to just 52 points as they fell to 14-7 overall and 3-3 in CAC action. The Captains forced 28 turnovers and grabbed 19 steals in the game led by six from junior
Bailey Hodges.
Fan scored seven of the Captains nine points in the slow-starting first quarter as Mary Washington built a nine-point lead after ten minutes. Emily Thompson and Maddie Shifflett each hit three-pointers in the opening quarter and the Eagles had five assists on seven made baskets. The Captains managed 15 attempts from the field, but struggled to connect with just three made baskets.
After the first break, Christopher Newport flipped a switch and quickly flipped the scoreboard. A 14-4 run to start the second quarter put the Captains back even with Mary Washington, 22-22, headed into the media timeout after a three-pointer by rookie
Jovia Winkey from the top of the key. The Eagles teetered back in front for one possession before free throws by Ng and Fan gave the Captains the lead for good with three minutes left in the period. After Winkey's triple, Ng and Fan combined for the final 11 points in the first half and the Captains took a five-point edge into the locker room, 33-28.
A 10-2 burst out of the intermission put the Captains ahead by double figures when Hodges, Fan, and
Natalie Terwilliger scored to pull away from Mary Washington up 41-30.
Julia Hobbs added a pair of free-throws to cap the run to extend the lead to 13 before rookie
Sawyer Freeland put up back-to-back nifty lay-ins after a short Eagles response. The second-half defense led to eight points off turnovers while the Captains shot 50% from the field in the third quarter (8-16).
The dagger would come with 4:46 remaining in the fourth quarter when Fan concluded her scoring with a beautiful three-pointer from the corner. After a dish by Hodges, Fan faked hard to her left and got her defender to leave her feet; with the open space, the sophomore shooter sank a back-breaking trey that put the Captains ahead by 19 with less than five minutes to play. Ng also hit a triple in the fourth quarter to help bolster her solid overall performance and picked up two steals in the frame. The Captains would cost to the 20-point victory from there, earning a 72-52 win at home.
Fan had a game-high 25 points while adding four rebounds, three steals and two assists. Ng also filled the stat sheet with a career-high 16 points, on 5-of-6 shooting, with 11 rebounds and four steals.
The win extended Christopher Newport's home winning streak to 17 games and their overall current roll to nine consecutive victories. The win came in front of a season-high 611 fans and the Captains will not return to action for a week as they take on York College of Pennsylvania on Saturday, February 8 at 2:00 p.m.
