Basketball Doubleheader Friday Afternoon as Captains Host York to Open Conference Play

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - York College of Pennsylvania travels to the Freeman Center Friday as Christopher Newport University's men's and women's basketball squads begin play in the Capital Athletic Conference. The action begins at 3:00 p.m. with the women's game, followed by the men's matchup at 5:30 p.m.

Friday will be Military Appreciation Day, as all military with ID will be admitted free to the doubleheader. The Freeman Center ticket office will open at 2:00 p.m. Friday, and military members can pick up free general admission tickets with ID beginning at that time. In addition to Military Appreciation Day, it will also be Camper Appreciation Day on Friday. Any Christopher Newport camper wearing a camp t-shirt will receive two free tickets to the doubleheader.

Both Christopher Newport squads are 11-4 as they begin Capital Athletic Conference play. York's men's squad enters Friday's play with a 10-4 mark, while the women are 9-5.

The Christopher Newport men have won their last four games, and the Captains were named Tuesday as the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Team of the Week. Christopher Newport went a perfect 3-0 last week to improve to 11-4 on the season. CNU started the week with a 97-78 victory over Wesley in the championship game of the the Captains Shootout. The Captains then went on the road for an 89-57 win at Washington on Thursday and a 92-81 victory at Widener on Saturday. John Krikorian's squad has now won eight games this season by double digits.

The Christopher Newport women have won their last three games to improve to 11-4, and are coming off an 87-76 victory on Saturday over Concordia Chicago in the St. Mary's New Year's Classic in Maryland. The Captains defeated Susquehanna a day earlier in the tourney, 90-79. Bill Broderick's team has won nine of its 11 games by ten points or more. York's women have also won three straight games heading into Friday's play.

Live video and stats will be available for both games of the doubleheader on Friday at CNUsports.com/watch. The men's game will also be broadcast on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 5:10 p.m.
