ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- In the Captains' last game of winter break, the Christopher Newport women's basketball team used the fast break to race past Concordia Chicago (2-7) in the non-conference finale of the 2019-20 season. The Captains improved to 11-4 overall after scoring 27 fast-break points in the game, forcing 32 turnovers with 18 steals.
Christopher Newport closes the non-conference schedule with an 11-4 record before opening Capital Athletic Conference action next Friday, January 10 at 3:00 pm.
Sophomore
Sondra Fan scored 10 of her team-high 13 points in the opening quarter with a pair of three-pointers and perfect 4-for-4 performance from the free-throw line. For her performance in the classic-format tournament, Fan was named to the All-Tournament Team. Rookie
Anaya Simmons also added eight points in the opening stanza, going 4-for-6 from the field as she and Fan scored all but one point for the Captains.
In the second quarter, the offense caught fire and scored 30 points in the ten-minute span with nine different players factoring into the scoring. The Captains shot 58.8% (10-17) in the stanza and pulled away from the Cougars by holding their opponents to just 4-of-13 shooting for a 30.8% effort. Sophomore
Jessica Foster buried a pair of three-pointers and notched a couple free-throws for an eight-point period to lead the way while the Captains bench scored all but two points in the second quarter.
Phylicia McInnis added five and rookie
Sawyer Freeland scored four.
The second quarter was highlighted by a dominant burst at the end of the half that saw Christopher Newport turn a three-point lead, 33-30, with four minutes remaining, into a 17-point advantage with a 16-2 run headed into the locker room. That four-minute run included a three-pointer by McInnis and a three-point play by
Jovia Winkey. Freshman
Zoe Costley also picked up a block and a rebound before scoring on the other end to help highlight the roll.
The lead would grow to as many as 19 twice in the third quarter before Concordia Chicago started to chip away. The Cougars nearly completely erased the advantage on a personal 8-0 run by Bailey Steinkamp with a couple of three-pointers and a jumper in the lane to cut the Captains' lead to just two, 66-64, with 8:11 remaining in the final frame. With the momentum shifted,
Julia Ng grabbed a pivotal steal and found
Sondra Fan on the run for a fast-break bucket to cushion the lead again.
Concordia Chicago turned the ball over on their next two possessions and the Captains got layups from Simmons and
Natalie Terwilliger to get the lead back to eight, 72-64. Despite Steinkamp and teammate Tara Hastings combining for 48 points, the Cougars could not complete the run and the Captains held on for the 11-point win.
The Captains had three double-figure scoring performances with Fan leading the charge. The Poquoson, Va. native scored 13 points in just 15 minutes of action while grabbing two rebounds and dishing four assists. Simmons added 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 steals while knocking down six of her nine attempts, and Foster tacked on 11 points with three made triples.
Rebounding continues to be a strength for the Captains as they outrebounded Concordia Chicago, 44-32, on Saturday with 19 offensive boards. Simmons had a team-high six rebounds while
Julia Hobbs and
Natalie Terwilliger each added five.
Christopher Newport will now shift it's focus to the CAC season as they host York (Pa.) on Friday, January 10 for a mid-afternoon matchup with the Spartans.
