NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport and Salisbury renew their men's and women's basketball rivalries Saturday afternoon, as the Captains travel to the Maggs Center in Salisbury, Md., for a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader. The women's game begins at 2:00 p.m. followed by the men's matchup at 4:00 p.m.
Both Christopher Newport squads are 14-4 overall and 3-0 atop the CAC standings.
John Krikorian's men's squad has won seven straight, while
Bill Broderick's women's team has won its last six games. Both teams have been off for the last week since sweeping Mary Washington in a doubleheader last Saturday in Fredericksburg.
Senior forward Dalon McHugh II has led or tied for the lead in scoring for the men's squad in each of the last four games for the Captains. McHugh is now averaging 11.9 points per game. Junior guard Jason Aigner went over the 900-point mark for his career last Saturday, and has now scored 913 career points. He is scoring a team-high 12.2 points per game. The Captains have not been out-rebounded this season, and are led in rebounding by senior Cutch Ellis, who is pulling down 6.6 per game.
The Christopher Newport women's squad also has two starters averaging in double digits, sophomores
Natalie Terwilliger (11.6 ppg) and
Sondra Fan (11.5 ppg). Terwilliger is also averaging 6.4 rebounds per contest. The Captains defense leads the nation in total steals, and is fifth in the country in steals per game.
Both Salisbury squads bring records of 8-10 into the twin bill, while the SU men are 2-1 in the CAC, and the women are 1-2 in conference play so far. Christopher Newport leads the all-time men's series, 30-15, while the women hold a 32-21 edge in their series with the Sea Gulls.
