BUENA VISTA, Va. - Christopher Newport puts its five-game winning streak on the line Wednesday night as the Captains play their first of three straight road games. The stretch begins in Buena Vista as the Captains take on the Knights of Southern Virginia University. Game time for the Capital Athletic Conference matchup is set for 7:00 p.m. at Knights Arena.
John Krikorian's squad is 12-4 overall and 1-0 in the CAC after opening conference action with a 79-68 victory at the Freeman Center Friday over York (Pa.). Southern Virginia is 1-15 overall and 0-1 in the CAC after dropping a 78-75 decision at home on Saturday to Salisbury to open league play. SVU has lost seven straight heading into Wednesday night's action.
Captains senior
Dalon McHugh II has led the team in the scoring column in its last two victories, posting a career-high 25 points at Widener on January 4th and 18 more Friday vs. York. McHugh is now averaging 11 points per game this season.
Freshman
Ian Anderson recorded his first career double-double on Friday, finishing with 12 points and 11 rebounds vs. the Spartans. Anderson is now averaging ten points per game. Junior
Jason Aigner continues to lead the Captains in the scoring column at 12 points per game despite not scoring on Friday. Aigner, however, contributed greatly on defense along with seniors
Luther Gibbs and
Nick Parks as the Captains held York to just 39 percent shooting for the night. The Spartans had been shooting 50 percent for the season.
Christopher Newport has not been out-rebounded by an opponent this season, and the Captains are led on the boards by senior
Cutch Ellis, McHugh, and Anderson, who all are averaging six rebounds per contest.
Wednesday night's game will be the 20th in the all-time series, and the Captains hold an 18-1 edge in the series. Christopher Newport has won the last nine games in the series, including three last year. The Captains won both regular season games and then ended the Knights season by beating SVU in the CAC quarterfinals, 89-59, at the Freeman Center.
The game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 6:40 p.m. The live action will also be streamed on CNUsports.com/watch.Â
